Bergen Hotels

Would appreciate your help in selecting a Bergen hotel, cost is more or less similar ( except for Radisson which is cheaper) -Radisson Royal, Norge Scandic, Skostredet, or Opus. We are a couple in 60s there from 3-5/7. Also would prefer late check out and air conditioning - though I don't think any of the hotels has air conditioning, only air ventilation. Not sure if this is true though. Many Thanks for your help.

My daughter and I will be staying at the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz in July, which was recommended by several people on the forum. The location is very nice and is located near Bryggen in the city center. Bryggen is a historic harbor district in Bergen, famous for its iconic, colorful wooden buildings.

Breakfast is included (and from everything I've read, it's quite a spread), plus there is a restaurant, fitness center, and spa. Rates were reasonable (for Norway). I think I'm paying in the mid-to-high $200s.

ETA: You are correct that most hotels do not have a/c; only centrally controlled ventilation. I believe the Radisson Blu Royal and the Clarion Admiral have it, though. If having A/C is important to you, you should double-check the hotel you choose.

I can't help with the hotel options you listed. But I stayed in early September 2024 at the Thon Bristol and really liked it. Back then, my rate was around $200 (off-season and booked early). It was quite chilly and a respite coming from a heat wave in Denmark, so I don't quite remember if I had individually controlled AC, I think only a centralized air. But I do remember an older couple asking front desk for a fan for additional comfort and that was provided easily.
Regardless of your hotel choice, maybe ask if they can provide you with additional fan. As for late checkout, I noticed some gave that option for a fee. Another thing to ask upon check-in or email the hotel before hand to ask if that is even a possibility.

Like Joy, we have stayed at the Thon Bristol several times and was very pleased. They did have a fan in the room, which I remember because on our last trip it was late August and cold, so no need for it. I am one that likes a/c in a room, but we were fine without it, FWIW. The breakfast was great, and you could pack a lunch to go (at an extra cost of course) which was nice for the days we were doing excursions. The location was ideal and I would stay there again.

Based on the forecast for next weekend in Bergen, 3-5/7, you shouldn't have to worry about air conditioning with daytime temperature in the low 60s.

We stayed at the Thon Rosenkrantz in a superior room in May 2023.. Great location, comfortable room and wonderful breakfast buffet. They will store your bags after checkout.

I forgot to mention about the breakfast - one of the best I had in Scandinavia. I didn't know about the pack your lunch at a cost. I used just took an extra pastry and fruit to go. But I did spend a good time at the breakfast getting my fuel for the day - the smoothies and coffee were fantastic, and great options for those with different diet (gluten free, vegetarian, etc).

You will be hard pressed to find hotels with air conditioning. We stayed at the Thon Rosenkrantz in Bergen in early August not long ago and the weather during our stay was nearly a heatwave for Scandinavia which sadly I think is becoming more common. We did not have AC in the hotel room and it was brutal! We had to open the window in our room which didn't help and just let in light and outside noise. Sleeping was miserable. They will provide you with a fan if you ask but it didn't really help. If AC is a must I would carefully vet the places you are considering staying at and confirm with them they have AC and that it will be operational during your visit. I have stayed in hotels in other European countries that claimed to have AC only to arrive and learn they don't turn their system on at certain times of year or only in extreme situations.

If you decide that you might want a splurge, a once-in-a-lifetime incredible hotel, try Charmante. https://www.hotelcharmante.no/ I stayed there a few weeks ago - I kept walking around the hotel sitting, taking pictures, etc. It is a splurge, but sometimes you just have to. And I just checked online, air-conditioning is listed under the rooms. Great location as well.
