Bergen hotels

I am in the midst of planning our trip, and am looking for a (reasonable) hotel in Bergen. We would prefer to be in the downtown area so we can walk to most sights. Does anyone have recommendations? So far, I have checked most of the hotels in the RS guidebook, but they are either pricy ($1000+ for 4 nights), or have no rooms available. Maybe we just need to bite the bullet and pay those prices?

I found similar issues when I was trying to find reasonably priced lodging. I finally looked at rentals and found what looks to be a lovely apartment steps from the funicular on a quiet street. We don't go for another couple of months, so I can't tell you for sure how it is, but I've had good luck (knock wood!) in the past with rentals in various countries. Of course, I have to recommend doing your due diligence and checking carefully before booking, but we have stayed in some fabulous places for less than a hotel and had very comfortable lodging of our own. We have already spoken with our "landlady" in Bergen, and she and the apartment seem to be what we anticipate. You might want to consider it. Good luck!

In the 90's I had a few of business trips to Bergen and they usually put us up at Hotel Augustin, across the street from the harbor on the south side. We really enjoyed it---particularly the breakfast, for which they are known. I cannot get their booking form to work on my iPad, but hotels.com say a room in August is $164 a night ( that is probably a prepaid rate so Flex rate would be a bit higher).

One time the Augustin was overbooked so they gave us a room at the Admiral across the street, right on the harbor. It was amazing--the bath/shower had a large window seat looking right out on the harbor. Hotels.com says that one is $202 a night---again, probably a prepaid rate.

Pricewise the Augustin is a great value and I would return that without a second thought. The textiles and decor were very nice, and the welcome warm and genuine. And with that breakfast we did not need to buy lunch!

Thanks for the ideas. I did check the Hotel Augustin, but they had no rooms available for the time we will be there. I was all set to check apartments, but got a message from P-Hotel, which I think will work for us.

We stayed at the Scandic Neptun and really liked it! It was a 5 minute walk to the fish market just a block south of the harbor. We stayed 3 nights and didn't pay more than a $150 per night...I hate paying a lot for hotel rooms!
I just plugged in your dates on booking.com to see what's available and there are a number of hotels under your price point still available. I always have good luck with booking.com...they tend to list a lot more places that the bigger consolidators like Travelocity and Expedia. Maybe give that a try?

I am sure I did check Scandia Neptun, with no luck, plus Scandia Strand (approx. $230 per night). However, I did find a reasonable place, so we are all set. Thanks for your replies!
