Bergen-Flam-Bergen-Bodo

Hi all! My plan is to take an evening train to Flam, stay a night then take a train back to Bergen (have a flight to Bodo in the evening).

I’m confused about the Flamsbana tickets. Are they the same as the tickets I will buy from www.vy.no for Bergen to Flam and back? Or do I have to buy Bergen-Flam-Bergen and Flamsbana separately? Thanks!

I see. Thanks very much! It was confusing to me because when I looked at vy.no, the route were Bergen-Myrdal-Flam & Flam-Myrdal-Bergen for the round trip tickets.

The first answer is wrong, doing that would give you four rides along Flåmsbanan. If you buy a return train ticket to Flåm it will be via Flåmsbanan.

There might be a bit of geographical confusion here. Myrdal is a station along the main line between Bergen and Oslo, from Myrdal there is a branchline to Flåm, the so called Flåmsbanan. So your routes will indeed be Bergen-Myrdal-Flåm & Flåm-Myrdal-Bergen.

But if it was me, I would not return to Bergen but continue to Oslo instead as there are direct flights from Oslo to Bodø.

Thanks Badger. I plan to go to Flam in the evening, so I guess I couldn't see anything. But next morning, I could buy a ticket from Flam back to Bergen which will include the Flambana railway, correct?

...from Flam back to Bergen which will include the Flambana railway, correct?

Yes.. You could travel from Flam uphill to Myrdal via the Flåmsbana, then return to Bergen via the Bergen Line train from Myrdal to Bergen.
Flam to Myrdal Depart 9:45 arrive 10:42.
Myrdal to Bergen Depart 11:11 afrrive 12:56

How are you getting to Flam? The boat ride on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord between Gudvangen and Flam are scenic reason for getting to or from Flam.

Thanks Edgar. I plan to just take a train from Bergen to Flam. Sadly, due to time constraint, I don't think I would have time for the ferry. I'll look into your suggestion and see if I can change my plan but I doubt it.

Correct! But if your final destination is Bodø I would buy a ticket to Oslo instead if I was you.

Thanks @Architeuthis and @Badger. My plan is to spend a day in Flam. My flight from Bergen to Bodo (to pick up a car to go to the Lofoten Islands) is 19:50.

  • Looks like I can take the 14:40-17:56 train (but I'm afraid if 1 hr 50 mins would be enough for me to go to Bergen airport). Perhaps I can take the Nærøyfjord boat in the morning?
  • Take the 11:05-14:57 train to Bergen. Just spend a few hours walking around in Flam.

I'm reluctant to go back to Oslo since I will fly to Oslo first from the US and have 3 days there. I've also booked a flight from Oslo-Bergen to join my friends and we'll go to Preikestolen. This will be my 1st trip to Norway and I'm kicking myself because my bad plan... It seems the Bergen-Flam-Bergen isn't really work out well... If anyone has any suggestion, I'd greatly appreciate it!

It's a bit tricky to give advice when we only know a part of your schedule. But the reason I would go to Oslo instead of Bergen is that it is a bigger airport and has a larger selection of direct flights to Bodø. And if you are flying to Bergen, you'll miss the Oslo-Myrdal part of Bergensbanen.

My advice would then be to cancel the flight to Bergen, take the Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo to Bergen and then continue to Bodø.

Or the alternative to a Oslo NiN start Bergen finish is to start the NiN from Bergen via Voss, Godvangen, Flam, Myrdal to Oslo. SAS has multiple non-stop flights from OSL to Bodo (BOO) with a flight departing OSL 8:40, a late flight departing OSL 21:50 and five non-stops between the two.

Thanks for the replies. My itinerary is

  • arrive Oslo 10/12 in the afternoon.
  • Meet friends on 10/15 and we all fly to Bergen on 10/16 in the morning (flights have been booked). Pick up a car, visit Stavanger, etc. then drive back to Bergen to return the car on the 20th, afternoon. We’ll split and I’ll pick up a car in Bodo, take the ferry to Reine (Lofoten) on 10/21. -10/26 take the ferry back to Bodo, fly to Oslo and back to the US.

So I’ve thought about doing the NiN from Oslo back to Oslo on the 13th-14th (or even until 15th) but I’d have no time in Oslo (which would be fine with me). Or cancel the Oslo-Bergen flight, do Oslo-Bergen NiN and see my friends in Bergen on the 16th ...no refund :(

-That’s why I was thinking that I could take a train to Flam on 10/20, stay a night and take the train back to Bergen. Them catch a flight to Bodo. I don’t know if it’ll worth going to Flam just for that train ride on such a tight schedule. Or should I not go, enjoy Bergen and save Flam for the next time. Thank you for all suggestions :)
