Bergen and Fjords

Hi,
We are planing on flying to Norway from USA for 7 days on July 20th. I was thinking to first stay and visit Bergen for 3 days then rent a car and drive to see the fjords for the next 4 days. I am open to any suggestions where to go and what fjords to visit along the way and places to stay over night. Also should we skip the car rental and use a public transportation? We like adventure and to be independent. But also we want to experience a beautiful nature.
Thank you very much.

You really don't need 3 days in Bergen - 2 days is MORE than enough. It's a very small town and there are limited things to see and experience there.
Your mode of transportation will depend on which fjords you want to see...there are many! My favorites are the ones further north. My absolute favorite is the Geirangerfjord. It's, by far, the most dramatic and has the bonus of the Trollstigen pass, the town of Alesund, and the absolutely stunning scenery in the whole area. Some of the islands near there are worth the effort to get to - Runde Island is very nice because hundreds of thousands of birds that nest there. Truly amazing! You would need to fly from Bergen to Alesund to make the most of your time - easy, quick flight from Bergen. Once there, a car rental would give you the independence you want. Driving is very easy and the roads are great!

I was thinking to take the Norway-in-a-Nutshell boat ride from Bergen for a full day to visit Sognefjord & Nærøyfjord. And travel by car to Hardangerfjord. Appreciate all the information we can get. Thank you.

Another question how is the drive from Bergen to Trollstigen? is it scenic? I know is around 8-hours but I know is also a beautiful region of Norway. Still trying to decide where to go. Thank you.

There definitely is enough to do in Bergen in three days! You could take a 3-hour cruise one of those days, and there are also some museums further out of town, like the Edvard Grieg Museum.

If you want to experience nature, I'd recommend taking public transportation. It is possibly cheaper, and rather than worrying about navigation you can sit back and enjoy nature! Norway in a Nutshell is the most popular trip, but since you are planning to spend four days in the fjords I'd recommend doing Geirangerfjord in a Nutshell.

Hope this helps!

Thinking about other possibilities to fly first to Alesund rent a car and drive to Trollstigen, possible to Atlantic Road then to Geiranger. After that come back to Alesund and fly to Bergen to discover the city and other fjords.

This is the plan for discovering Norway. Please let me know what you think:
Day 1: Arrive in Ålesund in the early afternoon; rent a car in the airport; drive to Sæbø for the night.
Day 2: Visit Geirangerfjord; drive to Molde and spend the night. ***(my husband is not willing to drive on the Trollstigen, he is afraid of heights.)
Day 3: Drive the Atlantic road then spend the night in Ålesund. Explore Ålesund in the evening then the next day for the half day.
Day 4: Fly from Ålesund to Bergen arriving at 5pm, rent a car in the airport then drive to Norheimsund spend one night.
Day 5: Explore the Hardangerfjord area; drive to Balestrand (staying there for 2 nights)
Days 6 & 7: Visit Sognefjorden area.
Day 8 & 9: Drive back to Bergen spend two more nights and explore the city.
