My wife and I are planning an 8 day trip in September -- our first visit to the west of Norway. We like to see the sights, experience interesting places, take short hikes (2 mile), and prop up our feet on the veranda of an Inn/B&B while soaking in the experience. We arrive Bergen Saturday noon after crossing the pond, and I have two nights booked there to recover and experience the city. Monday morning, we'll rent a car and plan to return it in Trondheim 6 days later. The following is my thought on the itinerary, and I would most value any advice:
Monday morning -- rent car at Bergen airport and drive to Sognefjord via Voss. Maybe take the Gudvangen/Flam ferry round trip. Definitely visit the Hopperstad stave church at Vik. A key question I have is where to stay for two nights as a base on Sognefjord. In perusing this forum, I've picked up suggestions for Aurland, Sogndal, Balestrand, and Solvorn. Wherever we stay on Sognefjord, we would want to take a day car/boat trip on the Tuesday to experience fjordland.
Wednesday -- leave Sognefjord and drive to Geiranger. Spend one night at Geiranger.
Thursday -- leave Geiranger and drive the Trollstigen road -- then on to Alesund. Spend two nights in Alesund.
Saturday -- leave Alesund in the morning and end the day at Trondheim. Thinking of driving the Atlantic road, but are there any other thoughts on how to spend the day driving to Trondheim.
Optional thought -- we could fly out of Alesund thus giving us one more day somewhere on this itinerary. Any recommendation on spending a day driving Alesund-Trondheim vs. adding another day someplace?
Sunday -- catch plane out of Trondheim -- or Alesund (and on to a week in Scotland).
