I've heard that one way charges for rental cars in Norway can be horrendous. Does anyone have a recent experience of the much the car rental agency adds on for not returning in the same location? Wed be renting in the Bergen airport and dropping off in Alesund (or vice versa).
Depending on the car class ~$450-$700 ( per a really quick look on expedia) for the one way fee in addition to the rental rate.
Take a look at www.AutoEurope.com. They have good deals with the major car rental agencies I looked at renting in Bergen and dropping off in Alesund. The car would have been about $125 for one day. The one-way dropoff charge was $500!
We decided to fly from Bergen to Alesund which was less expensive than taking the bus! And changed the plan to rent a car for two days in Alesund and return it in Alesund. Took highway 63 and saw the Trollstigen, Rauma River Valley, Trollveggen and Geirangerfjord.
www.wideroe.no has flights.
Hurtigruten ferries run overnight from Bergen to Alesund, but that will not be useful if you want the car for sightseeing between Bergen and Alesund. Also, the cost of the cabin on the ferry will not be low.
