Avaldsnes Viking "touring"

This may be a long shot for testing your knowledge, O Gurus, but we would like to travel from Bergen to the Viking settlement at Avaldsnes for a day trip.

Is this a reasonable trip or excessively long for a day outing?

Is anyone familiar with public transportation details (we don't particularly want to fly and will not have a car) and about how long it will take to get there?

I read in one place that public transportation was limited on weekends, especially on Sundays, which is something we are considering; how much more of a timing problem would it be to go on a Saturday or Sunday?
I've seen various references to Avaldsnes, Karmoy, Haugesund, and Bukkoy -- can anyone clarify what's what?

If anyone has done this, is everything within easy walking distance once we get there or do we need to plan "trips within the trip" to see the various points of interest? Is there a guide map or similar to let us know where and how to get around to each place?

Thanks in advance, again, for any assistance; I realize this one is a bit more "off the beaten path" than many of the queries!

I think that this is too far to do in one day...car or bus is 4 or 5 hours to get there. If you fly to Stavanger it's still quite a trek of a combination of buses and ferries to get there. At the very least you should spend the night. That said, I think it's worth it! In my experience, "off the beaten path" places in Norway are never disappointing.
If you want to see transportation details I would recommend the website rome2rio.com. You can type in your starting and ending points and it will show you all of the possibilities to get from one to the other.
