Aurland Taxi to Stegastein

Planning a trip for my family (4 adults, 2 children) to Norway next June and trying to figure out how we will get up to the Stegastein View Point. We will actually be passing through in a rented car, but I hear the drive up to the view point is tricky and not advisable for all drivers. I have heard that taxi is a more flexible option than getting a Norway's Best bus tour from Flam or Aurland, but in trying to find more information about the local taxi company (there is reportedly only one), I came across a slew of bad reviews about poor reliability. Does anyone have any experience with Aurland Taxi or have other taxi/driver recommendations?

If you want someone to drive you up, Aurland taxi is your only choice. I don't know what kind of reviews you've seen but prebooking the trip is probably a good idea.

The road up is narrow and steep so leaving the driving to someone else might be a good idea.

We drove to it on Tuesday. After everything else we have seen and done in Norway, I didn't think it was that spectacular. I loved staying in Aurland, though.

You can use your rented car. For sure the serpentines of Aurlandfjell are a little ambitious driving and narrow at some points but still possible for a "normal" car - even big tour buses drive that route.

I drove that part three times with my own car and never had damages or severe issues.

I drove up to Stegastein last year by myself in a rental car. I went early in the morning and only had one other car to face off with on the narrow road. I drove many narrow, twisty roads that trip and was glad that I got up early for that one! If it’s busy, it would not be fun at all. I actually really liked the view up there, but I love viewpoints, I did not drive back down as I was leaving that day for my next stop and decided to go over the “snow road”, which meant continuing on that road rather than heading back to Aurland. If you have the car, I would say go for it but make it the very first thing you do in the morning.

We stayed in Flam earlier this Summer and rented a car for 2 of our days. I personally drove up to the viewpoint and down again-safely. While there were a few turns on the way up that led to a brief stop and (twice) a short time in reverse, I found the drive enjoyable. Everyone seemed to be on the same page in that I didn’t experience any overly reckless driving nor did I witness any road rage. I felt like a local (expert) on the way down. Be careful around turns but speed up a bit at the beginning of a straightaway if there are no oncoming cars. My wife and her friend had other plans that day and the following day took a bus tour from Flam up to the viewpoint with Fjord Tours. It was about 35 mins each way and I believe they were given about 20 mins at the viewpoint. They enjoyed it.
