August 2025 Hotel availability without booking in advance - Bergen to Alesund

I'm planning a driving trip from Bergen to Alesund and intend to spend 3 or 4 nights on this drive. I know I can book hotels in advance, but I'd really like to take the trip day-by-day and find lodging wherever the day ends.

Q: Is hotel availability this time of year such that I can stop and obtain a room along the way or do I have to book in advance to be able to guarantee a place to sleep?

The intended route (nominally) is Bergen-Sognefjord-Balestrand-Fjaerland-Skei-Nordfjord-Innvik-Oldedalen- Loen-Styrn-Hjelle-Geiranger-Trollstigen-Andalsnes-Hjorundfjord-Alesund.

Edit: Thanks for your thoughts

I would be wary of traveling during high season in Norway without lodging reservations. Lodging is already expensive, so for me, I want to be able to choose carefully and get the best value. Also, many of these places are smaller, thus they have fewer options.

If your budget is bigger than mine, this may not be such a concern for you.

August is long. At begin of month more tourists are traveling.

I recommend to book most visited locations such as Bergen, Geiranger, Ålesund, ... in advance.

We visited Norway this past year, (last week of August - first week of September). I would say that by this time the peak of the season was past. In fact, the operator of the rubber inflatable boat tour we took from Flam said that the would be ending their season the very next week. The weather was great and there were still many tourists but I imagine that you would be able to "just show up." That is, unless you had a particular lodging in mind. There is always the possibility of a local event that could be counter to your plans.
For my part, I don't like to move very much. I find the in-ing and out-ing takes up too much time. Likewise, I have reached a season of my life where I am intolerant of the "barely acceptable." I have some money and time but I don't like to waste either. I don't like to be uncomfortable especially when I am on vacation.

How many of you are traveling? The more there are the harder to find a place

How price sensitive are you? The 'mid price' inventory is likely to go first; the high end and 'dumps' are the last. to go.

How demanding are you of the type/condition of the lodging?

Have you looked at lodging availability in the prospective locations you may want to spend a night. If inventory is low now it is unlikely to improve later.

If I were traveling then, I would not rely on 'just show up' as my plan.

I agree with the above comments. I spent some time in Norway during June 2022. Although I am very much a book-it-as-I-go traveler (though usually 48+ hours ahead rather than day of arrival), my pre-trip research backed up what I had read about costs in Norway. I didn't want to be stuck spending a lot for lodging, so I booked most of my hotels at least weeks ahead of time. Oslo was less of an issue than other places, I think because business travel was reduced in the summer, and that's a key part of the lodging demand in Oslo.

You'll have a car, which gives you flexibility to choose lodging across an area, rather than being tied to a specific town. That will help. Another thing that would help is a willingness to stay in apartments or other private accommodations rather than hotels. I don't like worrying about whether the key holder will show up to let me into an accommodation, so I stick to hotels wherever possible.

I'd recommend taking a look at lodging rates on booking.com for the dates you'll be in Norway to get an idea of what you'll need to spend. Not all rooms are listed there, and booking directly is likely to save you money, on average. On the other hand, the costs you see today are likely to increase between now and the dates you'll be in Norway. I took a look at Alesund, just because I've stayed there. For the night of August 28, the lowest hotel rate I found was $178 for a single room. The next cheapest rate was $208.
