I am reading Rick`s book in preparation for a trip to Norway and Sweden next Aug/Sept (2024). I am having trouble figuring out Nutshell options and would appreciate a little help. Essentially would like to take the train from Oslo, spend two nights in Flam, and then continue to Bergen. I would appreciate your thoughts on travel time and travel options/types and also thoughts on buying tickets.
Thank you as always for your help.

Regular train Oslo to Myrdal and Flamsbana Myrdal to Flam: Book as a single ticket on www.vy.no. the Oslo-Myrdal part of that ticket will be cheaper if bought early. That train can sell out during peak periods, too.
Ferry Flam to Gudvangen (through the scenic Naeroyfjord): Book on www.norwaysbest.com.
Skyss Bus 950 Gudvangen to Voss: Pay the driver. As of June 2022 this bus was making a short scenic detour with a photo stop,
Regular train Voss to Bergen: Book on www.vy.no.
I don't remember the duration of the various legs of the trip precisely, but the Oslo-Myrdal trip is rather long--5 hours or more, I think. You can check easily on the website I've provided above.
The Flamsbana takes about 1 hour. Vy.no also has that schedule.
The Flam-Gudvangen ferry is about 2 hours. NorwaysBest has the schedule.
The Gudvangen-Boss bus is about 1 hour. You can find the schedule via Google.
All of the schedules may vary by season. This is a good time of year to document August-September schedules so you have the information you need to put the pieces together in the coming months.
Lodging in Flam is very tight. The options are not numerous, so I recommend doing some research now and creating a list of your preferences. Once you have your dates pinned down, make a cancellable reservation so you aren't left scrambling for a place to stay. I had almost no options when I tried to book a room 6 months in advance for a June 2022 trip. More people seem to be traveling this year, so I'm not comfortable saying you'll be safe if you start looking for a room by X date.
You don’t need to stay two nights in Flam if you can’t find lodging for two nights or would rather prioritize elsewhere. One night is sufficient to do the classic nutshell route without any difficulty. If you do stay two nights you’ll have flexibility to see something else nearby.
One consideration is whether you want to bring your luggage with you on the nutshell route and then continue directly to Bergen or be able to leave it at the hotel (and either stay overnight and travel the next day or begin your Bergen journey at that point). If you have a lot of bags, leaving them behind for that day is liberating.
You also have the option of taking the express boat from Flam to Bergen. It is not faster than the land transport options (despite the name) but you get more time on the fjords with some nice scenery. However you miss the scenery from the train ride west of Myrdal and there’s only 1 daily express boat departure.
Just did Norway in a Nutshell about 3 weeks ago -- from Bergen to Oslo. Booked everything myself individually, and it was easy. Some tips:
- The bus from Voss to Gudvangen (or vice versa) takes credit cards. No issue with our US-based credit card. Pay the driver.
- If you're concerned about getting a good seat on the Bergen-Voss train in the morning, take a Vy train that offers seat reservations. One leaves about 15 minutes before the commuter train, and the cost was about the same.
- But tickets for each segment in advance during tourist season.
- We used Porterservice AS (www.porterservice.no) to transport our heavy bag from Bergen to Oslo. They picked it up on-time from our hotel in Bergen, and it was waiting for us in the evening at our hotel in Oslo. Cost about $40 USD. Couldn't be easier, and it freed us from lugging a heavy bag.
- If you're traveling on the Myrdal-Oslo train, try to buy some food before getting on. The Internet is spotty leaving Myrdal, and the credit card machine in the onboard cafe may not work off-and-on for the first 90 minutes. Have fun!
