Alesund to Bergen in 1 Day - What Would You Do?

It's a tough call. I haven't been to the places where you'd have to cut time. But you'd probably enjoy the drive more and feel less stressed if you were staying closer to the airport. Looks like there are two ferry crossings along the route; try to check schedules.

What happens in Copenhagen? Are you spending time there or connecting to another flight (like an expensive flight home)?

My daughter spent a semester in Copenhage spring of 2016 & we're going for 2 days at the end of our trip so we can visit the family she lived with, lovely people. Thus it's a $52 flight on Norwegian Air. It's hard to pull another night from somewhere as I tend to think a 3 night minimum is necessary if you plan to do much, IMHO. However, not sure about being on pins & needles for a day at the end. It could put a damper on the beautiful scenery. Part of me says we can start early & allow ample time & the non-risk taker side of me says to be more conservative. We'd likely pull a day from the Solvorn area or Alesund.

We will try to check ferry schedules. I'm definitely curious on what others would do since I will over analyze this to death. Thanks for your input.

Bergen – Aurland – (Lom) – Hellesylt – Ålesund – Slinde – Bergen will add 1h but split the distance.

It would also make me very nervous to try to drive all the way to Bergen from Alesund if I had an 8PM flight. Why don't you think about doing your itinerary in reverse? Start in Bergen, drive to Alesund, and then work your way back down? That way your last day will only be a few hours from Aurland to Bergen. Much less stressful. If you don't already have your hotel reservations this might solve your last day problem?

Thanks for your thoughts. JZ though I'm not entirely sure what you are suggesting, an added stop in Lom? I do see your suggestion to switch up Slinde & do that area on the way back, excellent idea.

Anita, unfortunately, we do already have reservations with Airbandb places. However, as I reviewed our reservations, I think we may be able to switch up Slinde & Alesund & move up Hellesylt so we are much closer to Bergen on the way back. If we would have started in Alesund to make our way to Bergen, wouldn't we have the same issue of a huge drop off fee for the car in Bergen? I'd read there would be a fee but I expected $100 or $200, $500 is too much. We should have checked on the drop off fee before I made our reservations.

I'm going to see if we can switch reservations to 3 nights in Aurland (no change), then to Hellesylt for 3 nights, Alesund for 2 nights & Slinde for 4 nights on the way back. We would then a more reasonable drive on our last day to Bergen, 4-5 hours dependent on our route.

Anita, I'd noted you've recommended rome2rio.com for people to use & I've been using it. However, it looks like it doesn't include a possible ferry but will direct you around. We've been using Google Maps & rome2rio.

Anita, I just read your response again and understand we'd do a long drive at the beginning as we'd be reversing our stops and, of course, no 1 way drop off fee. The issue there is we'll have been traveling a long time already & I expect we won't get into Bergen before early afternoon. I think that plan would be too hard with our lack of sleep from flying. And I don't think I could switch up all our reservations. It's a good idea though & I appreciate your input.

What do you think of my new plan? I need to get messages sent out to see if it can be done. Based on calendars in airbandb, I'm hopeful it can be done.

2 of 3 hosts okay with changes, issues in Alesund, booked 1 of days we want & next 2 days are Jugend Festival, higher price but more important the town will be BUSY. We may have to cut Alesund. Back to the drawing board.
