Alesund to Bergen Advice

We are planning to do a road trip from Alesund to Bergen for 9 days in September. Exploring Sognefjord, Jotunheim and other worthwhile stops en route. My questions for this community are:

1) Since we have never been to Norway and don't really know what to expect, is is feasible to sketch out an loose itinerary but not make hotel reservations and just book as we go once we arrive? That way we can have the freedom to stay where we want for as long as we'd like?

2) What other destinations (besides Jotunheim and Sonefjord) would you recommend along the Alesund-Bergen route?

2) We are contemplating about a day and a half in both Alesund and Bergen. Is that enough time? We are heading from Bergen to Copenhagen so are not too keen on spending more time in cities than necessary.

Thanks in advance.

1) My advice would be to make hotel reservations in advance. Besides Alesund and Bergen, some of these places are quite small and, even in September, you don't want to arrive in a town and not be able to find lodging.
2) I would highly recommend going through the Geirangerfjord on the car ferry and driving over the Trollstigen Pass. It's the most beautiful area of Norway IMHO.
3) A full day in Alesund and a full day in Bergen are plenty. Both are quite small and picturesque but there really isn't more to do beyond what can be done in a single day if you just limit yourself to seeing what's in each town. If you venture outside of the towns there are lots more things to do!
