9-Day Summer Itinerary - Your Opinions, Please

Hello all. Planning this Norway itinerary is killing me! I'm having a really hard time with it so I would greatly appreciate your opinions on this 9-day itinerary for this July. I haven't specified many details yet, since I want to know first if this looks like a reasonable time frame to see the top sights in each area without rushing. Our main focus is on the natural beauty, but we want to mix in some time in a couple towns as well. This is for my husband and me (61 and 62 years old, in good physical shape). Is this a good start? What needs to be tweaked? Thank you in advance!

Day 1: Afternoon arrival in Oslo (from east coast U.S) - overnight in Oslo
Day 2: Oslo –all day here (overnight again in Oslo)
Day 3: Early morning train to Myrdal, then on to Flam. (overnight in Flam)

Day 4: Spend the day in Flam area (overnight in Flam)
Day 5: Morning in Flam area. Afternoon NIN tour- ferry from Flam to Gudvangen, then take bus to Voss, and evening train to Bergen (spend night in Bergen)

Day 5: Spend day in Bergen (overnight in Bergen)
Day 6: Morning flight from Bergen to Alesund, pick up rental car. Drive (via Trollstigen route) to Geiranger (overnight in Geiranger)
Day 7: Gierangerfjord and area (overnight in Geiranger)
Day 8: Gierangerfjord area (overnight in Geiranger)
Day 9: Morning drive back to Alesund. Fly home via Oslo

Also, is there any point or benefit in kayaking in Naeroyfjord if we'll be already be on a ferry there as well (on the NIN tour) ?

Looks like a typical itinerary. With 9 days I think you could use a car for a round trip from / to Oslo. You simply see more and can do your own speed outside a tourist bubble.

Typical advice to visit Flam without cruise ship in port. Add Stegastein while you are there.

As an alternative to flying from Bergen to Alesund, you might consider the overnight trip on Hurtigruten ferry--maybe also possible on a Havila ship. I think the ferry departs about 8 PM and arrives about 8 AM. My cabin was small but comfortable, with a full attached, shower-equipped bathroom.

If you don't already have lodging booked in Flam, you may struggle to find something at this point.

MarkK and acraven - Thank you both for the suggestions! I'm looking into these ideas now.

Check on the Trollstigen Road, we will be there in May and were told it was closed by a rock slide. So you can drive to Geiranger from the other side, but maybe not through Andalsnes...

We are taking the night ferry from Bergen to Alesund, departs 8:30 pm, arrives 9:45 am. But not every day, I don't think. Maybe more frequent in summer?

I hear you on the planning! I have traveled a LOT, and putting together our trip to Norway is the most complicated one I have done. The various modes of transportation, with all the water/coastline to work around, is way more to plan than just driving through the countryside anywhere else! We will be in Norway for a month - mid-April to mid-May. Hoping to see the orchards in bloom around May 1st. We may be a little early. Fingers crossed.

"What needs to be tweaked"? STAY LONGER!! :o)

ENJOY!!

In official traffic map I see only the regular winter closing for Trollstigen.
