7 days trip from Bergen - What to do?

This is for our trip in early July. We are 2 adults and 2 kids (9 & 4). We are planning to stay in downtown Bergen for 2 nights, exploring the city and then rent a car to go to sightseeing some amazing nature. With our 4 year old, we don't want to hike much, but easy walking is okay.

We'd love to see great nature places. Saw Rick's video on Norway in a nutshell. If there is way to do by ourselves that would be great so that we can stay somewhere either in Flam or Sogndal. Other places we are interested to see is Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord.

We are yet to book the accommodation, so feel free to suggest an itinerary for us from Bergen to Bergen for 7 days.
Thank you.

I understand that planning to Norway is not easy. Off course no one responded to my question in 3 days.
Can someone tell me if this itinerary works:

July 1: Arrive Oslo at 2:30 pm. Rest and go around Oslo
July 2: Oslo sights - Open Air Folk Museum, Oprah House, may be a museum
July 3: Oslo in the morning; flight from Oslo to Bergen at 3:00 pm; Reach Bergen at 4:00 pm; Roam around Bergen, Take Funicular to the top; Stay in Bergen
July 4: Norway in Nutshell: Bergen-Myrdal-Voss-Flam-Bergen
July 5: Car rental from Bergen; drive to Sogndal: See some sights on the way. Sognefjorden cruise & I need your suggestion here. Stay at Sogndal
July 6: Sogndal: Glacier walk; Balestrand & something else. Stay at Sogndal
July 7: Drive to Geirangerfjord area. Need your suggestions. Stay at Geiranger (hotel yet to be booked)
July 8: Explore Geirangerfjord : Need some suggestions. Stay mid way to Bergen: (Forde may be)place yet to be decided
July 9: drive to Bergen; car return; Explore Bergen; Stay at Bergen
July 10: explore Bergen; flight: Bergen to Oslo 5:00 pm; Reach Oslo at 6:00 pm; Stay closer to Oslo Airport
July 11: Oslo to US at 6:00 am

Thanks.

I haven't been there yet, and may not get there now, due to the strikes, so I can't advise, really, but you seem to be doing a bit of back and forth. Does your Norway in a Nutshell route not take you on the Sognefjord already?

Hi Kaye_Jay,

Have you already booked your flights? If you are interested in seeing the fjords from Bergen, it would make more sense to fly from Alesund back to Oslo, rather than go all the way back to Bergen. Here's my suggestions for your Norwegian itinerary:

7/1 - Arrive Oslo, spend 2 nights
7/3 - fly to Bergen, spend 2 nights
7/5 - pick up car, drive to Flåm or Aurland (3 hours), spend 2 nights
7/6 - spend the day in the Sognefjord, doing an abbreviated "Nutshell" trip - Take the boat from Flåm or Aurland to Gudvangen, then take bus to Voss, train to Myrdal, Flåmsbana cogwheel train back to Flåm
7/7 - drive to Lom via Solvorn & Jotunheimen National Park (4 hours), spend 1 night
7/8 - drive to Geiranger, in the Geirangerfjord (2 hours), spend 2 nights
7/9 - spend the day cruising the Geirangerfjord from Geiranger to Hellesylt and back
7/10 - in the morning, drive to Alesund, via the Trollstigen road (2 hours), then take an afternoon flight from Alesund to Oslo, spend last night at a hotel near Oslo airport.
7/11 - fly home

I recommend buying the Lonely Planet Norway book, which covers much more of Norway then Rick's books do. It will give you hotel & restaurant recommendations in each of these locations, as well as info. on local tours and sights.

I'd use www.skyscanner.com for booking the inter-Norwegian flights (Oslo-Bergen & Alesund-Oslo).
Use www.booking.com for hotel recommendations near the Oslo airport your last night, as well as for hotels in any of these other areas.

For rental cars, use www.autoeurope.com. I also recommend a good driving map, such as the Michellin Scandinavia map. You an also use google maps or www.viamichellin.com for looking at routes and driving times.

For details and schedules on your abbreviated Norway-in-a-Nutshell trip in the Sognefjord (Flåm or Aurland to to Gudvangen, bus to Voss, train to Myrdal, Flåmsbana cogwheel train to Flåm) see www.norwaynutshell.com/original-norway-in-a-nutshell/
You shouldn't have any problem booking these various segments once you are in the Sognefjord.

Hope that helps,
