We arrive in Oslo the morning of Sunday, Aug 16, and we fly home out of Oslo on Thursday, August 20. We'd like to get over to Bergen and to get into fjord country. I have read about Norway in a Nutshell, but am confused about to "do" the various segments as well as the "best" places to visit. I'd love advice about the ideal itinerary, the more specific the better! Thanks so much.
Rick's Scandinavia guidebook has a full chapter on the Nutshell region and route. I'd wait until next month to buy the next edition of the book, since the "current" one is now a couple of years old. Meanwhile, see http://www.norwaynutshell.com/en/explore-the-fjords/norway-in-a-nutshell/ and boat schedules at http://www.ruteinfo.net/en/. The most straightforward Oslo-Myrdal-Flam-Gudvangen-Voss-Bergen route is not the only option, but may be the best fit for the time you have.
At least a full day in Oslo and a full day in Bergen would be the core experience filled in by the journey to and from.
