4 Hours in Voss?

I am about to book Norway in a Nutshell for a 2-day trip in late May, from Bergen to Oslo. There are 2 options. The first is a quick series of connections to Flåm. The other has a 4+ hour stopover in Voss, and that's what Norway in a Nutshell is automatically selecting as the connection. I am inclined to override this and request the quick change in Voss for 2 reasons: We will have our luggage (could be overcome), and it doesn't seem that there's enough to do in Voss that it's worth dealing with the luggage and taking that time away from Flåm.

Thoughts?

Hi Leslie - here's my 2 cents worth, which might not even be worth that, but . . . we were looking at going to Norway this coming April, but couldn't get the time off. Not having been to Norway, but having done a little research, however, it appeared that Voss was the bigger place with more to do, and that Flåm was little more than a train station, a boat dock, and a smattering of shops or places to grab a quick bite between transportation transfers. Others may have much more detail, but we'd actually been considering staying for a few nights in Voss.

Cyn,

Everything you say about Flåm is consistent with what I have read as well. Sorry to hear that your trip won't work out!

The reason we're stopping in Flåm is that we want to do the FjordSafari trip. And the Flåmsbrygga Hotel looks like a lovely place to stay for a night. We might venture to Aurland for a short visit, but we'll figure that out once we're there.

What were you thinking of doing in Voss? Does anything seem worth the stop, given that we're definitely doing the overnight in Flåm?

Thanks!

Leslie

Hi Leslie - among other things, we'd hoped to get in some cross-country skiing, and one of the guidebooks we'd checked out from the library (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, etc.) had raved about Voss as being a major location for skiing opportunities.

Rick's guidebook also describes the nearby surviving Stave Church (which unfortunately wouldn't have been open in March or April) as being one of the grandest in Norway. As I recall, they have some notable museums in Voss, too, but then so do Bergen and Oslo.

Your overall time availability may not allow spending much time in Voss, but it seemed there might be some things there that could make for a memorable day or two. Good luck with your planning and you trip, and we hope to get to Norway some day!

Thanks, Cyn. We won't have time to do that much, even if we overnighted in Voss. I think we will stick with Flåm. We thought that the FjordSafari would be a lot of fun, especially with our 20-year old kids.

Anybody else out there have a compelling argument for a 4 1/2 hour layover in Voss vs. just high-tailing it to Flåm?

Thanks again!

4 more hours by the fjords at Aurland/Flåm wins, hands down, vs. Voss in this kind of trip. Enjoy the Fjord safari and the views.
