Wondering about availability of quality tea in Amsterdam…

I know this is sort of an off the wall question. I’m soon to leave for 10 days in Paris followed by 10 days in Amsterdam. I’m a strong black tea junky, not interested in Lipton, and Twining is borderline. I take Yorkshire red/gold with me. I looked in various stores in France last October and didn’t find anything other than basic store brands black tea or Twining tea.

So I’m loading up my tea bag stash but somewhere I think I heard that there was more of a tea culture in the Netherlands. I don’t know if it’s true but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Any tea brands in stores in Amsterdam anyone can recommend I try? I’d appreciate it, thanks.

Nothing specific, but there are specialty tea shops in Amsterdam, while they are unlikely to carry Yorkshire teas, you likely can find something of interest. I remember going by a few, maybe into one to look around, but can't say which one with any confidence. A quick Google search near where you are staying may yield some options.

There is also a couple locations of "Kelly's ExPat Shopping", they claim to carry Taylors Yorkshire tea and other teas.

Yes, there is a bit more of a tea culture. In the Netherlands they use mainly Pickwick, which I think might be a Douwe Egberts brand. It's quite good IMO (I am a tea drinker).

Have a look at this link: https://www.ah.nl/producten/2120/thee It's to the Dutch supermarket Albert Heijn. A key for you: zwarte thee = black tea, groene thee = green tea, kruidenthee = herbal tea. You can at least see brands. The website is in Dutch but you can probably switch your browser to translate to English.

Something you may not have come across: the teapot is kept over a tea light in this special holder. I think they just call it a theelicht (after the candle). They do this in the north of Germany also (and if you are a true tea lover you must seek out the tea-drinking ceremony there).

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will just take enough tea for my time in Paris and do some shopping in Amsterdam and try some Pickwick tea, thanks, lavandula. I now remember when I lived in Germany for 4 years back in the 80s the tea light under the teapot was very common and I had two different ceramic tea light holders for my teapots back then. Now I use my microwave to heat up the second and third cup. Not near as pretty, is it?

And getting to Sterk should be easy, thanks for the link, Windyram,
