Will I be too late for tulip fields?

Hi All,

I'm feeling very tempted by some great prices to London and considering a trip to Amsterdam. The one hiccup is the dates..we'd land on April 30th and then we'd take the Eurostar to Amsterdam, meaning the earliest we could get to Keukenhof and the tulips in the fields would be May 1st.

Am I correct in thinking this is about a week to 10 days too late? I realize Keukenhof will be open, but it's been a dream of mine to see the tulips in all their glory and I'd rather not miss it.

Is it a definite that they will be cut already? If not, what sort of chances are there that they'd still be in the fields? 10-20%?

Thanks again

Unless we have a very very very early spring it would be highly unusual for all the tulips in the fields to be already headed on May 1. This heading or cutting is usually done during the first week of May but even then does it not all happen on the same day. You should definitely be able to see tulip fields in bloom on May 1.

Please advise that the cutting only applies to the tulips in the fields in the bulb area. It does not apply to the tulips in the Keukenhof. The flowers in the Keukenhof are grown for their beauty, not for their bulbs. That’s why the gardeners of the Keukenhof use all kinds of techniques to make sure there are flowers in bloom during the entire time the Keukenhof is open for visitors.
For the tulip farmers it’s all about growing bulbs. So they will cut the flowers of the tulips when they feel it’s the best time, despite the beauty of the endless rows of tulips.

Maybe others have some recent experience, but I think you can go into mid-May and still see tulips. They plant to extend the season, but I imagine there is a peak, and then it sort of wanes. I know we went later in the season one year, sill nice, but you could tell it was past it's prime.

May 1 should be early enough to still see a decent show, but the wildcard is weather, if there is an early warm Spring, then all bets may be off. We actually will be in the area about the same time (Maybe May 3-7) might play it by ear, but have lots of other things to do.

Thanks to you both. Dutch Traveler, you have definitely gotten my hopes up! Would May 1st be well past the peak at Keukenhof?

I'm hoping it would everything I've imagined and probably then some. Is it easy to see both Keukenhof and the fields on the same day?

Thank you so much

“ Would May 1st be well past the peak at Keukenhof?”

The gardeners of the Keukenhof use all kinds of tricks and planting techniques to make sure there will still be flowers on the closing day. They for instance use ‘lasagna style’ planting with bulbs planted at various depths.
They however can’t control Mother Nature, so no one will be able to give you a 100% guarantee. On the other hand I’ve never heard complaints from people who went to the Keukenhof in May.

“Is it easy to see both Keukenhof and the fields on the same day?”

It’s very easy. The Keukenhof is surrounded by tulip fields. You can visit the Keukenhof in the morning, rent a bike and explore the fields in the afternoon.

and there are usually boat trips through the bulb area which start at the Keukenhof.

Reviews of these boat trips tend to be a very mixed bag of positive and negative. The downside of these boat trips is that the water is lower than the land and that the tulips aren’t very high. This means that it’s not always possible to get a good view of the tulips.
A bike gives you the opportunity to get a really good view of the tulip fields, the chance to stop at a pick-your-own tulip garden etc. Plus riding a bike is a very Dutch thing to do! :-)
Unless you’re not comfortable on a bike, I would always recommend to explore the tulip fields by bike.

Thanks all- really helpful info! We did some number crunching and have decided to postpone this trip until next Spring instead so we can really enjoy it.

I'll keep ll of this in the back of my head until then.

Thanks again,

Be aware that next year we have a very late Easter, at April 20, 2025. This means that the peak blooming of the tulips during the last 2 weeks of April coincides with the Easter holidays. This is the perfect storm for hotel prices and airfares to skyrocket. If the bulb farmers decide to hold the annual flower parade in that weekend too, hotel prices will take off into the stratosphere.
