Will Amsterdam be open for tourists this August?

A group of 4 of us are considering traveling to Amsterdam in August prior to taking a Viking Cruise. I am receiving some reports that much of Amsterdam is closed due to Covid-19, and that it might be better to postpone the trip until Europe has opened up - is this still the case? In addition, the Viking Covid policy will only allow guests to participate in excursions or activities escorted by a Viking-approved tour operator. This will leave large time segments with nothing to do but stay on the ship. I don't want to overreact, but it sounds like postponing the trip might be best.

So, is Europe and Switzerland open or not?

So, is Europe and Switzerland open or not?

Blockquote

Well, Switzerland is not currently open to US tourists. We just have to wait and see if it will be open in August. No one knows at this point.

The big problem is that NOBODY knows. It is strictly speculation and hope. So there is no answer to your question because I cannot find the power cord for my crystal ball. And the battery is dead. We are sitting on the same question for London/Paris in late September. At the moment we are strongly leaning to cancelling.

SusanR, I was in Amsterdam a few days ago and I'd say 75-80% of things are open now - certainly those that most visitors would want to see: The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, etc. By August, barring some type of COVID infection surge, I would expect the city to appear "normal" to a visitor.

But as mentioned, "Will The Netherlands be open to USA travelers?"

The Netherlands has had some of the most stringent entry restrictions in the past year due to its high COVID infection rates. And the government has taken a very conservative position. I would not be surprised if they are the last EU country to fully open to external visitors. As of today, Americans are not allowed to enter the country. As mentioned, no one really knows what August will bring...

There seems to be a lot of questions on the forum about whether (fill in the blank) EU country will be open to Americans by August. First of all, some are opening this week (France, Spain, etc ) and many will open on or prior to July 1.
Secondly, August is still almost two months away. Look no further than the progress we have made in two months and our vaccination rates per capita are less than their current run rates. We booked American Airlines flights using miles for travel to Spain on August 12.
I suggest we all relax and do what we do best - trip plan!

If you are coming from a country where the risk of contracting COVID-19 is low (a safe country) you do not need to show a negative test result when you travel to the Netherlands. You are also not required to self-quarantine when you arrive in the Netherlands.
