Widespread public transportation changes in Amsterdam from July 23

In a few weeks, a brand new subway line will open, connecting the northern part of the city (across the IJ river), Centraal Station, and other stations near Spui, Leidseplein/Museumplein, de Pijp and Amsterdam Zuid train station.

This means that not only travel times from hotels located across the river or in the modern Zuidas area will be slashed, but also that widespread changes to the tram and bus network are coming.

For instance, the combination of train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Zuid and subway will be much better than bus 197 for those staying in Southern neighborhoods.

Indications of tram routes on hotel sites, guidebooks and this forum are most likely to become outdated.

So if you are traveling after that date, use the best source of information for public transportation in Netherlands, the website (and app) www.9292.nl

Also, bear in mind many hotels opening for business soon outside traditional areas.

traditional areas.

Why? What was the impetus?

Amsterdam city authorities have a moratorium on new hotels being within the 1st and most of the 2nd canal belts. Furthermore, the Zuidas (the area surrounding station Amsterdam Zuid) has emerged as a large business and increasingly entertainment district.

We recently stayed near Amsterdam Zuid and quite enjoyed being a little outside central Amsterdam in the evenings. The #5 tram was most convenient and provided an opportunity to visit some local cafes usually off the normal tourist path (Eetcafe Fidelio, Cafe Loetje on Johannes Vermeerstraat, Saigon Caphe). Plus some of the business hotels in that area are relatively inexpensive on the weekends.

Finally made it to Loetje on my last business trip to Amsterdam. Not to be missed. Late June is tourist zoo season, but go outside of the Museumplein and you rarely see tourists....and those you do see are smart ones.
