Which public transportation ticket is best for Amsterdam?

We will be staying in Amsterdam, near Jordaan. We plan to travel all over the city, including Haarlem, and visit the Anne Frank House ,Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Of course we would also like to see all the canals. We will be in Amsterdam for 5 days. Which is the best ticket for us to purchase if we want to use the trams, buses and possibly trains around the city. I heard the OV Chipkaart is a good one but do we need this or should we just buy single tickets as needed?
Thanks,
Kris

How much use you'll make of the public transport? The city centre is compact: from the Jordaan, where you'll be staying, even the furthest attractions you mention can be reached within 30 mins along the canals, and walking is by far the best way to appreciate it all. For the occasional ride, you can buy a ticket on the bus or tram for EUR 3,20. A day ticket will cost you EUR 8,00. (See all the possible tickets on the GVB website.)
A return ticket for the train to Haarlem costs you EUR 9,00. Get it from the machine or at the window at the station.
