What to do in Amsterdam?

A close friend and I are meeting in Amsterdam June 27-30. It will be a fast trip, so we want to have some things planned out before but also have down time. So far, the Anne Frank Haus and Van Gogh Museum are my top picks - what else should we see/eat/do?

Raegan, it really depends to an extent on what you're interested in. If you're a first time visitor, you might like to walk across the Amstel River on the Magere Brug (the "skinny bridge"), check out the National Monument at the Dam Square, and take one of the boat tours of the harbor and major canals. If it's art, there are the Rembrandt House and the Rijksmuseum. If it's shopping, how about visiting the Bijenkorf department store and the Albert Cuyp street market? Because of who I am, I'd want to see some places on the following list: the Homomonument, the Jewish Historical Museum, the Hollandse Schouwburg holocaust memorial, and the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. Maybe the person you are would like the Heineken brewery, the Vondelpark, the Bulldog No. 90 original drug cafe, the red light district, the Hortus Botanicus botanical garden, or the Begijnhof women's retirement residence.

It took me several visits to add these to my list and after visiting, I wish I'd put them on a lot sooner - Maritime Museum, Dutch Resistance Museum. Check to see what's on at the Hermitage Museum.

I like to rent a bike. It's easy to get around the city and you feel like a local.

You certainly shouldn't miss the Jewish Historical Museum, which consists of the Portuguese and German synagogues. In my view a much more important monument for the Jewish history of Amsterdam than the Anne Frank Huis. (Your »haus« is German, which is somewhat painful in this context.)
Another special place is »Ons Lieve Heer op Solder« (Our Dear Lord in the Attic): a hidden catholic church from the days protestantism was the official religion of Amsterdam (www.opsolder.nl/en/museum-ons-lieve-heer-op-solder).
The Grachtenmuseum (Museum of the Canals) tells the story of how Amsterdam became the city it is today (www.hetgrachtenhuis.nl/en/).

The best view of the city is from the canals, take a boat tour. We took on right after the Riks and the boat leaves right across the street from the museum. Of course the Red light district which my wife enjoyed way more than I thought she would. Much of Amsterdam is more enjoyable after visiting a coffee shop. 420 Coffeeshop on the Singel for a pleasant experience.

I love Amsterdam. The best part this time of year is just strolling; it is such a beautiful city. There are three great major museums -- Riijks Museum, Van Gogh and Hermitage and dozens of other interesting museums and galleries. The canal boat is fun. If you do Anne Frank definitely come with a timed ticket reservation. when I did it, I literally walked right in and the line with people waiting, many of whom had tickets, but not timed tickets was several blocks long.

There are lots of Indonesian restaurants although I kind of like classic Dutch food myself. And the bar food like bitterballen, toasties and such makes a tasty snack along with a pint in late afternoon.

Walk. Strolling the canals in the Jordaan area is so worth it. You'll be there when daylight hours are very long and hopefully you will get some good weather. Stop at a café along the canals, then walk some more. Rick Steves guidebooks have some excellent planned walks with great information, and other private walking tours offer great experiences. For more specific sites, Anne Frank House and Van Gogh would be great (be sure to think about advance tickets, especially for the Anne Frank House which has notoriously long lines at all hours). The Rijksmuseum is close to the Van Gogh and worth a visit. The Rembrandt House Museum is cool. Our favorite was Our Lord in the Attic museum, well worth it and far more interesting to me than the nearby Red Light District. Enjoy your trip!
