Westfries Museum

My husband and I will be visiting the Netherlands and Belgium in September. For one of our days in Amsterdam, we were thinking about heading to Hoorn and Enkhuizen. In Hoorn, we were interested in visiting the Westfries museum. The virtual-reality walk discussed in the Rick Steves book seemed intriguing.

After visiting the website for the museum, it appears that it is completely closed currently and won't reopen until 2027. You can however, take a "podwalk". Has anyone done this? What did you think of the experience?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Last year, I visited Hoorn in mid-May...I loved it & wish I had spent more time there (I was only there for an afternoon after going to the Alkmaar cheese market earlier in the day). At the Westfries temporary space, there was a short video/multimedia presentation on the history of Hoorn that was pretty good & then they handed out booklets for a self-guided walking tour. I think there were about 20 or so buildings listed & two recommended routes, one longer one that included all the buildings & more of the waterfront and one shorter with maybe half of the stops. I thought it was really well done for a self-guided tour, though I will fully admit to losing steam after a little while & getting sucked in by one of the many great cafes lining the square right by the musem...it was a beautiful Friday afternoon & happy hour was calling! But the booklet was very informative and the town is absolutely beautiful; I imagine the podwalks are similar content but audio instead of printed? I would definitely spend time in Hoorn again if I had the chance...would love to go back once the museum has reopened.

In summary: Hoorn is worth a visit regardless, but if you're into history & old buildings, I don't think you'll be disappointed by the self-guided Wesfries walking tour.

Like MaggieD, I was in Hoorn last May. I didn't visit the Westfries temporary space, so I can't comment on that. However, I can say that both Hoorn and Enkhuizen are absolutely lovely!

Our trip started with two nights in Hoorn, and my husband and I both loved the town. We also did a day trip by train to Enkhuizen from Hoorn. We couldn't get enough of walking around these adorable towns and their parks. To us, we just enjoyed the beauty and simplicity of these places. Plus, we had some nice meals, especially in Enkhuizen. In fact, we loved these two towns so much that we extended our trip by 3 days and revisited them again.

Sorry I can't answer your question about the Westfries; I just couldn't resist praising two of my favorite Dutch towns :-)

LaurieC,

Thank you for the information! Looks like we will be visiting Hoorn and Enkhuizen on our day north of Amsterdam. I appreciate you and Maggie taking the time to answer my questions!
