Waze

I use Waze when driving in Ontario; I turned my phone to airplane mode then tried to call, text or email; couldn't do any of these but I could still use Waze? Is this possible in Amsterdam and can you have it show to walk anywhere, can't find the way to do this?
Thanks,
Jean

Waze uses data or wifi. So you can use it when you have wifi (like in your home or hotel) but AFAIK not on the road. The benefit of Waze is that it's interactive so it needs a continual connection.

I just tried my phone on airplane mode at home. It said "no network" so I guess the answer is NO.

I don’t use Waze, but I do use Google maps. Google maps has the option to download the maps of a specific area, city or country. If you’ve downloaded a map, you can still use it to navigate if you don’t have internet connection. If you use the offline version, it will of course not show real life traffic info, but it will tell you where to go. Like I said, I don’t use Waze, so I don’t know if it has a similar option, but it could be worth to look into. Or you can try and use Google maps.

The only benefit of Waze is for when you’re driving to tell you where cops are. Google Maps is much more accurate for driving directions, walking and public transportation than Waze.

@Susan; what do you mean by “cops”? Do you mean that Waze shows where cops have set up a speed trap? Or something else?
I ask this because, at least in the Netherlands, Google maps will tell you where you can encounter a speed check.

Dutch, in the US it tells you where police in a vehicle are hiding to stop you for speeding or any other infraction. We don’t have speed cameras in the area where i live, i don’t know about other areas. Waze is very good at telling you where they are, but Google Maps is more accurate for driving directions.

My point in my 1st post is that Google Maps is more accurate for directions than Waze.

Why when I turned my phone to airport mode was I still able to follow the Waze directions?

Waze saves me considerable time relative to competitors. I don't know anything comparable with continuous traffic updates reflected in changes in route,

Invaluable to me in London. Just today it saved me at least 20 minutes quickly diverting me from the M40/A40 onto the M4 before I reached the issues on the M3.

Coming home it put me on the North Circular instead of the M4, later borne out in radio traffic bulletins but I beat the traffic.

(granted England, not Netherlands)

@Nigel; when connected to the internet Google maps does the exact same thing. It will show delays and it will give a warning if a faster route has become available.

Because Waze is interactive it's a data hog and a battery hog, a friend discovered that after she began a drive, she could switch to airplane mode and Waze would continue to show the route. However I suspect that it would no longer be interactive so would not adjust for changes in traffic conditions.

That'd be ok with me... is there somewhere I can change the mode from driving to walking?

I'm afraid that Waze does not do walking routes
