Waterland in winter?

My family will be in Amsterdam for 4 full days in late January. I am thinking of taking the bus to see the Waterland villages and wonder if this is a feasible option at this time of year. Has anyone been there in winter? We have a 12 year old who will not want to spend a lot of time in art galleries or museums in the city, so I am looking for ideas to break things up a bit.
Thanks, Linda

The architecture will be there, most shops open (on limited hours) especially on weekends. It can get cold and days are short though. The Zaanse Schans museum is opened (limited hours on outdoor activities). It is still worth, actually it can be quite peacefully to visit the towns in winter weekdays without any of the crowds of summer time.

Just get out early to maximize your daylight, even it means leaving your hotel 7.30AM, in the dark.
