Thanks for sharing, but this isn’t something new. It’s the same Closer to Vermeer with Stephen Fry that has been available via the Rijksmuseum website for weeks now. It has been mentioned on this forum several times already by various posters.
See here for the direct and official link; https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/johannes-vermeer?ss=

Thanks, Mardee. Although apparently it may have been mentioned on this forum before, I certainly missed it and am glad for the info!

Thanks! I just received it in my email and had not seen it on the forum. I did a quick search as well, but there are a lot of Vermeer postings, lol! So it was news to me. Either way, I will enjoy it online since I can't see it in person.

Of course it can’t hurt to share it again, but those that already saw Closer to Vermeer with Stephen Fry might be disappointed if they followed the link and found out it wasn’t anything new at all.
It’s also a bit strange that the article mentioned in the OP is trying to make it seem that this is something new and only made available now that the exhibit is sold out. It isn’t new and it has been available on the website of the Rijksmuseum since before the exhibit started.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention, Mardee. I had half a thought to work Amsterdam into my spring travel plans, which I decided against. And my Mom has traded in her passport for armchair travels. So this will be fun for both of us!

I'm looking forward to it, too! I will be at AMS in early May but somehow I don't think a 90 minute layover at the airport will give me time to catch the exhibit.

Ah, but you could watch it online at the airport and then casually mention that you saw the Vermeer exhibit while you were in Amsterdam :-)

I just visited the Vermeer exhibit today and it was great! I managed to grab a ticket for the very first time slot of the day and I’m glad I did, because it was still somewhat uncrowded.

A word of warning though about the video linked in the first post. This video is not an online version of the exhibit, because the video also discusses several works by Vermeer that are not in the exhibit. I’m not talking about the Girl with the Pearl earring that went back to the Mauritshuis on March 31, but about paintings that were never in the exhibit in the first place. For instance The Astronomer, The music lesson, A maid asleep, Girl with a veil etc etc.
I saw several people using the video as a sort of audio guide and several people were asking staff where the missing paintings were. One guy even seemed upset and called it “a joke” because according to him it should have been mentioned in the video. On the other hand, the Rijksmuseum never says anywhere that the video is an online version of the exhibit and that all the paintings in the video are on display in the Vermeer exhibit. Several media outlets do call it an online version of the exhibit and that’s seems to have started the confusion.

The video/presentation by Stephen Fry is awesome. Thanks for posting this @Dutch_traveler.

The video with Stephen Fry in the English version is indeed amazing and explains lots of interesting things about the paintings. It’s very informative and that’s probably why some people were using it as an audio guide in the absence of a real official audio guide. Nothing wrong with that, especially if you bring along your headphones and remember that not all paintings in the video are on display in the Vermeer exhibit.
