Van Gogh Museum worth the money?

Hello All: I just checked ticket prices and currently for 2 it is $65.00. We have seen many Van Gogh's in our trips to France - especially museums in Paris. Is there something really special about the works and presentation at this museum? We have only 5 days in Amsterdam and quite a few other museums and sights we need to prioritize. I like & appreciate Van Gogh, but I don't love his work as I do that of Rembrandt, Renoir and others. I welcome input please from those who have seen this museum. Thank you in advance. Susan

These days you can probably find a vlog where someone taped the tour, you can see what is there and whether it's worth the dough.

"Worth the money" is a very individual calculation. The Amsterdam museum has one of the biggest collections of Van Gogh anywhere and it is a very nicely designed museum. I've been twice and would go back in a heartbeat. That said, if you have other priorities then don't go. The Rijksmuseum also has some Van Gogh as well as many other masterpieces that may suit your tastes.

BTW it looks like there is an upcoming special exhibition in conjunction with the Stedelijk Museum going on from 7 March to 9 June so that may be why the prices seem high because it covers two museum entries (general admission for Van Gogh is usually 24 euro per person). If you do decide to go, make sure to purchase only on the museum website and not through a third party vendor.

Thank you for info and suggestions. I thought I read somewhere that this exhibit is set up chronologically to show his development. If so, is there accompanying written or audio info in that regard? That would make it more interesting to me. I much enjoy being educated about what I’m seeing when I’m looking at it.
Again, thx

The museum is roughly arranged chronologically, with special exhibits in the basement/lowest level. You can get a feel for the layout of the museum and signage by looking at its Google Arts and Culture page, two of the floors have "virtual visits" (about half way down the page) https://artsandculture.google.com/partner/van-gogh-museum

The museum does offer an audio tour and guided tours, but I've not used either.

(edited to add links that disappeared with the gremlins, apologies)

From what I recall, the museum houses the largest number of Van Gogh works, and does a good job following his career from very early until the end.

You will see major works, some of the Sunflowers, works from Arles, self portraits, but as you alluded to, a number of the major works that everyone recognizes are in Paris, London, New York, and other museums.

I think the museum is best for those that enjoy Van Gogh and perhaps Impressionism in general. Obviously, the Rijksmuseum would be a better use of your time, (having several Van Goghs as well.) If you really like the Dutch masters, and you will be in the area, the Mauritshuis, with some great Vermeers might be worth the trip to The Hague.

Susan--Yes it is set up chronologically and there are numerous things to read about him. I am not a huge museum person, but really loved this one when we went last February.

Thanks so much for all the info. Mikilz, you gave me just the info I needed. I’ll be reserving tickets. Husband and I really enjoy seeing an artists development thru time.
