I followed RS's guidebook's advice about visiting the VG museum on a Friday night (late September). When I arrived I discovered that the museum hosted multimedia art happenings on Friday nights. I'm not sure how long this has been going on or when it might end. Anyway, the museum was crowded, with lines to get tickets and to get admitted. (Tickets are sold in a separate building next door to the museum entrance.) It was more crowded than the Louvre, which I visited the previous Friday night.
We noticed a similar crowding on a miserably rainy Friday night last month. We did not see evidence of any special happenings, but it was crowded beyond belief and we are sorry we did not follow our son's recommend to go at opening on a weekday.
The museum is hosting several multimedia performances on Friday nights. Not on all Fridays but on most . The goal is to attract a younger crowd and spread attendance more throughout the week. The Stedelijk is also considering going the same way .
Hi Carol, we also visited the Van Gogh Museum on a rainy Friday night, Oct 20. We pre-purchased tickets online for 7 p.m. There was some sort of event going on, music and drinking on the first floor. There were groups of high school/college students milling around but we got the idea that they were there to socialize. It was a bit crowded on the steps and in the hallways but most of the viewing areas were open. Overall, we thought it was a pleasant way to spend a Friday night.
