Utrecht to Haarlem by train, King’s Day

Hello,
We will be travelling from Utrecht to Haarlem on King’s Day. It has been suggested to us that we go via Leiden rather than through Amsterdam CS. I understand trains will be busy that day and I’m wondering if this route makes sense. Because it is a national holiday, are there fewer trains that day? We are thinking of using the baggage storage option at Leiden for our suitcases and spending a few hours exploring before we continue onwards to Haarlem.

Thank you for any feedback regarding this tentative plan.

Trains will run. It is just that Kings Day means that a lot of people travel to Amsterdam, so the trains to Amsterdam will be very full, which is why avoiding trains going to Amsterdam is in your case a good idea.

AVOID AMSTERDAM AT ALL COSTS ON KING'S DAY! I didn't and boy was I sorry. Spent the entire day in my room. Which took hours to get to from the station. Leiden is worth a stop. I stowed my bag at the station and spent a few hours there.

There is absolutely no need to avoid Amsterdam on Kings Day. It can be very crowded in some parts, but these can be avoided. It can be a fun experience to join in the festivities of our national holiday. Just make sure you wear something orange and a smile!

I agree- there is no need to avoid Amsterdam on Kings Day. I was there in Amsterdam on Kings Day a few years ago. I put on my orange shirt and set out walking at 9:00 am from my hotel. The streets in the central ring were shut down or diverted, so walking was a breeze. For the first hour, there was barely anybody outside. It wasn't until 10 am that people brought out their items for sale on blankets in the street. Only around noon, did the city become crowded - and then only in the areas that were hosting events. The ferry across the river was crowded and Dam square was crowded. Around 2 pm, the canals in the Jordaan were full of boats with revelers all wearing orange. Quite a party scene. But other than that, it was not wall to wall people. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in the crowd size. I thought it would be like Times Square on New Years eve in New York or Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach throughout the city. But it wasn't that crowded. And in the event areas where there were crowds, the people were respectful. It wasn't a mad house.

I wouldn't avoid Amsterdam for fear of crowds. Put on a orange shirt and enjoy the festivities.
