Tulips in Noordoostpolder or Keukenhof?

I can only speak to the 7 million bulbs at Keukenhof, which are fantastic ! I know nothing about seeing tulips from the air, but I expect those are private production fields. From the air you would miss the details on the flowers: ragged vs smooth edges, multi colors in the same bloom, various heights, etc. Perhaps you could consider doing both experiences.
I've been to Keukenhof twice in three years, and highly encourage you to visited the NL in April. I'll look for my Trip Reports.

Be aware of King's Day!

Consider that the Keukenhof itself is a beautifully landscaped Park, even without the blooming bulbs. Picture Butchart Gardens, except flatter. And being able to appreciate the artistry of the display, and get inches away from those gorgeous flowers is indescribable.

Tulip fields are just that. Long strips of various colours. . How close you can get to them if going by car is debatable, But apparently there are maps and tours for exactly that. Of course from a balloon you will see the fields from several hundred feet in the air. Keep in mind that the tulip growers head back or deflower the plants in late April or early May (depending in weather) to promote bulb growth. If you are late, you may just see miles of green leaves.

The area around the Keukenhof is indeed not the only place in the Netherlands where tulips and other bulb flowers are grown. The area around the Keukenhof is the most famous and also most practical for visitors. You can enjoy the beauty of the flowers in the Keukenhof in the morning and bike or walk around the long stretched flower fields in the afternoon. Due to its proximity to cities like Haarlem, Leiden and Amsterdam, it’s very easy to get there by public transport.
Other areas where bulb flowers are grown is the area around Julianadorp, north of Amsterdam, the Noordoostpolder, which is Northeast from Amsterdam, and all the way in the southeast in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. These areas are much more difficult to reach by public transport. Especially in the case of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which is practically impossible to reach without a car.

Dutch_traveler: You mean all the way in the southwest in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen? But the bulbfields are in the eastern part of this region.

Hmm yes, my description of where the tulip fields in Zeeland are is not particularly clear. They are indeed in the eastern part of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen as a whole is located in the southwestern part of our country.

A few tulip production fields can be seen from inside the perimeter fences of Keukenhof. The park now operates a small electric boat service (extra charge, and probably scheduling) that tours some of these nearest Keukenhof.

We spent a week in Haarlem the last week of April 2022. I really wanted to go to Keukenhof and my husband is a good sport and went along. We went on Kings Day. I figured that many people would be doing other things that day to celebrate the holiday. We arrived early afternoon, stood in a short line to buy our tickets and before long we were in. It was spectacular! Even my husband was enchanted by the place and were spent far more time there than we anticipated. We had planned to rent bikes afterwards to ride past the fields but we were too late and they weren’t renting them anymore. If I was to go again I would arrive earlier. I wasn’t there any other day, but I would say that Kings Day didn’t seem overcrowded. There is plenty of room for people to spread out.

Thanks for the info so far. I'm intrigued by the hot air balloon because of how spectacular our flight in the Dordogne was two years ago and it's something I Google before every trip now; no matter where we're going. The downside is that the Noordoostpolder area is not as convenient as the Keukenhof and we also want to venture south toward Delft and Kinderdijk. We were in the Netherlands twice last year and for us the country has gone from "we should visit it someday" to "wow, what else can see on our next trip?"

Thanks for the warnings about King's Day. I was kind of aware of it, and after further reading, I think we'll try and be somewhere in the middle of the action that day. We may base in Leiden again and spend the day enjoying the festivities.

Although we went to Keukenhof on Kings Day we were able to enjoy the festivities in the morning and evening in Haarlem. I feel like we got the best of both worlds.
