We are visiting The Netherlands in April with our 4 and 6 year old. We want to see tulips and are looking for the best field recommendations. We are considering staying in the Rotterdam area but are open to suggestions!
How will you be traveling? Will you have your own car, or are you using buses and trains? Will you be cycling with the kids in a bakfiets? Do you want to see fields planted or would you like a structured and deeply intense garden such as Keukenhof?
The most famous and popular flower fields are around Lisse and de Keukenhof. That's about 45 minutes away from Rotterdam, either by train and bus or by car.
From Rotterdam, you could also drive south by car to Goeree Overflakkee. There are great tulip fields in the area between Den Bommel and Dirksland.
Will tulips still be in bloom before the June 2nd tour?
Keukenhof gardens should be considered.
A Day Out at Keukenhof with Kids
My children enjoyed our day at Keukenhof. They were mesmerized by the
number of flowers, the different designs, and the seemingly endless
gardens through which we walked. We had fun trying to choose our
favorite flowers:“This is my favorite! No, wait, THIS is my favorite!”
They ran along the paths and explored the many colors and designs. We
found small streams and stepping stones and bridges to jump and walk
on. It was just so nice to be spending the day outside together. When they wanted a break from looking at flowers, there were other
activities as well. A giant playground, petting farm, and maze turned
the day into an adventure for them. It was a great way to burn off
some mid-afternoon energy!
