Trip to Edinburg ,Scotland and Amsterdam, Netherlands

Hello,
I am planning a trip to go to a wedding in Ireland. I plan to leave Ireland from Dublin on June 12, 2024. I want to go to Edinburg and stay there a few nights and then continue on to Amsterdam. I have from June 12, 2024 until June 23, or June 24. I have no idea how long to stay in Edinburg or Amsterdam. I will not be driving, but will travel in these two countries by train or bus. Any information that you could share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,
Marlene

It looks like you have 11 or 12 touring days if the 23 or 24 is your flight back home. I'd recommend booking your flights as an open jaw itinerary - that is in to Dublin and out of Amsterdam. On the website of your airline it will be under the tab for multi-city or multi destination.

I would fly from Dublin to Edinburgh. Do you want to do some day trips from Edinburgh to see some of the area as well as spending time in Edinburgh? I'd want 5 nights there so you can do some day trips. There are a number of local companies that have trips to various places that might be fun for you. Rabbies is one that is often recommended here but I've no personal experience with them.

I'd fly from Edinburgh to Amsterdam. I'd spend 6 nights there which will also allow you to do some day trips. Transportation in the Netherlands is excellent so you can easily hop on a train to visit Haarlem, Leiden, Delft etc.

What kind of things do you want to see and do?

I think Pam's suggestion about 5 nights in Edinburgh and 6 in Amsterdam are very feasible. And also her suggestion of flying into Dublin, then flying the EDI, then to AMS and home from there.

In Edinburgh, there are so many things to see in the city. I would get a good guidebook, or start here on the forum. These are some good travel articles you can look at. https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles

You can also take a few day trips from Edinburgh, like to Stirling Castle or St. Andrews. I loved Stirling Castle and the town of Stirling, and highly recommend visiting the castle and the town. It's easily done by yourself - it's about an hour by train from Edinburgh - or you could take a Rabbies tour there. And of course, there are other destinations not too far from there where you could visit. https://www.rabbies.com/en/scotland-tours/from-edinburgh

With 6 nights in Amsterdam, you would have a chance to not only explore the city but get outside and visit some other charming towns outside of Amsterdam, like the Hague, Leiden, Haarlem and many more. Public transportation is excellent in the Netherlands so it is very easy and very quick to get around by train. Again, I would suggest scrolling through this forum, check out the RS link above for articles on the Netherlands, and get a guidebook (you don't have have to buy one - you can find them at the library for free).
