Is there a transportation pass that covers trains, buses and trams? We will be staying in Haarlem for a week and plan to go to Amsterdam at least a couple of days as well as traveling to other towns. Thanks for any information you can provide.
Pick up an OV-chipkaart - https://www.ov-chipkaart.nl/home-1.htm#/
Thanks RnR. Can this be purchased at the train station?
Make sure you get the anonymous card https://www.ov-chipkaart.nl/everything-about-travelling/different-types-of-passenger/tourists.htm

Thanks roubrat and RnR. We arrive in the Netherlands tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it.
We just returned from the Netherlands. We purchased our anonymous OV-chipkaarts as described above at the train station window at Schiphol airport. If you buy that way at a train station, there is no need to take the small extra step of validating the card at a train station for use on trains. If you purchase the card elsewhere, it will work right away on transit systems, but you will need to validate it at a train station (you only need to do this once) before using it on a train. Super convenient.
We arrived by train yesterday at the Amsterdam Central Station and I tried to get the anonymous OV-chipkaart with no luck. It’s a long story, but we are staying for the week in Haarlem and we will go to the station today to try again.
Thanks everyone.
Oh no! Andrea, please update with details when you can.
We got our cards Monday morning at the Haarlem train station. We’re going to Amsterdam today, so I’m hoping it works. 🤞🏼
Also download the NS train app and the 9292 app, both free.
There was a train detour from Haarlem to Amsterdam on Sunday. You had to take a bus from Haarlem station to Amsterdamn Sloterdijk and then the train to Centraal.
As you may have discovered, to ride the trains, your OV chipkaart needs to have at least 20 euros on it.
You can refill the card by touching it to the sensor at the yellow machine. It will show you the remaining amount and you can pay the euros via a credit card that has a chip and touch payment abilities.
In Amsterdam, remember to tap in and Tap out of trams, buses, metro. You can ride those without a minimum. I used my card down to .59 cents before I had to refill.
Leaving Amsterdam tomorrow. Have fun
Just an FYI to "piggyback" on Andrea's post - and frontload her for her departure... AMS Schiphol now doing construction between Departures 2 and 3. The result is UPSTAIRS you have to go outside and walk along the exterior sidewalk when going from Departures 2 to 3. So some confusion, a lot of signage, and just another airport hassle.
But where this really has impacted traffic at AMS - at least today when I checked in for a flight to Rome - is at security. It appears one of the Security screening zones is closed. As a result HUGE LINES at security today. I waited in line for about 50 minutes just to get to the X-Ray scanner. Dropping off my bag at Vueling took about 35 minutes! This is FAR LONGER than I've waited in perhaps two years!
The construction (remodeling?) looks pretty intense, so if you're departing from AMS over the next few weeks, give yourself plenty of time to check in and get through security. (And to top it off, my flight is now delayed 2 hours - not Schiphol's finest week of service...) Looking forward to a glass - or two - of vino in Rome in a few hours...
Andrea, did you go to a ticket counter, or did the machine work?
The yellow ticket machine worked fine for me and should work finelong as you have a credit card with the tap (NFC). There is no slot to stick yourcard in..
We went to the ticket counter and had no problem using the train or tram today.
We arrived in Amsterdam from Paris on Sunday and ran into the problem with the train not going to Haarlem. We had to take the train, then a bus. It was a pain, but it could have been worse.
Ron, thanks for the heads up about the airport. Thankfully our plane doesn’t leave until 14:50 so it won’t be a problem to arrive plenty early. Is 3 hours enough time, or should we allow for more than that?
Glad it worked out!
I do have a tap card, so maybe I'll be OK, but good to know I can just go to the ticket counter.
