I am wondering if more than 1 person can use the same credit or debit card when paying for a tram ride. I have a card with no foreign transaction fees but the other individual does not so we were going to use my card for payment. Has anyone done this and if so will it work? Thank you so much.
I do not believe you can put 2 people on 1 card. That is because you have to scan out as well. Fortunately, the fares are low enough that there should not be a big difference in fares. Example: a 2 EUR fare, you will be charged about $2.24, where as your friend with 3% foreign transaction fee would be charged about $2.31.
You can use the physical credit card for one person and Google Pay/Apple Pay linked to the same credit card on your device for someone else.
There are quite a few threads on this topic in this forum, e,g., https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/netherlands/paying-for-amsterdam-public-transit.
And your Apple Watch for a third person, all billed to the same credit card. Enjoy this wonderful country!
Thank you everyone for the helpful information. This is my first trip out of the USA so I have a lot to learn!
I've also been on trams with a "ticket" person in the middle of the tram. We were always just tapping in and out, but I saw folks buy tickets from the booth - one CC for multiple people. We mostly walk in AMS, but the trams are super easy, and well run.
A thing to remember about using your Apple Pay - if linked to an Amex (or maybe something like Discover? - you may get "rejected" if they vendor (like the trams) only accept Visa or MC networks. Not saying this is an issue on the tram, but it is another "gotcha" that can happen.
But I love the card, iPhone, and Watch option! I will likely start using that method.
Tom R is correct... only Master Card and Visa are accepted: https://www.ovpay.nl/en/how-it-works. So of your Apple Pay or Google Pay is linked to an AmEx, this wouldn't work. This is also true for purchasing a ticket on the bus or tram.
