Tram / metro payment?

Haven't been to Amsterdam in a few years, will be back there again early 2026. Does the tram / metro system use a contactless card "tap & go" payment method these days, or do you still need to buy an actual transport card or paper ticket? Thank you.

Yes, Amsterdam definitely uses tap and go for the tram and metro. You can use your phone and smartwatch as well if it's set up for it. Just remember when you tap out to use the same card that you tapped in with!

The whole of the Netherlands uses the tap in and tap out system for every single mode of public transport. Fares are calculated based on distance, so that’s why you always need to tap both in and out. See the website of the joint public transport operators for more details about the payment system; https://www.ovpay.nl/en

We just returned from Haarlem/Amsterdam. We used our Visa cc to tap in and out of the buses. Easy peasy.

Be aware no AmEx is accepted. Yes, you can get paper tickets which are more expensive and have still to be paid with a credit or debit card as no cash is accepted (maybe at the NS Service Counters for trains). More info for trams and metro can be found here: https://www.gvb.nl/en/Payment-options.
