Train Travel from Leiden to Bruges

We are looking for the easiest way to travel by train on April 23 from Leiden to Bruges. Does it make sense to travel from Leiden to Brussels, change trains in Brussels then take the train to Bruges (this route require only one transfer) ? When I looked at going from Leiden to Bruges, it appears two transfers are required and there is a 5 minute connection for one of the transfers. Is it easy to make the transfer if you are not familiar with the train station?

Are there other options that require only one change perhaps Leiden to Rotterdam then to Bruges?

We do not want to take a Eurostar train. Thank you for your help.

If this 5-minute connection is at a Belgian station (Antwerp, Brussels or Ghent), you do not need to worry about this. Your ticket is valid for the entire day on Belgian territory. If you miss your connection, simply take the next train.

No, there aren't (with trains). You will always have to change once in Belgium (Antwerp or Brussels).

There is a direct connection (no change) between Rotterdam Central Station and Bruges with the Flixbus.

Book this on www.nsinternational.com. Pick a schedule that has you on a "Eurocity Direct" service.

The route will always be:
Leiden - Rotterdam - (Antwerpen - Gent) or Brussel - Brugge.

If you buy a full flex ticket you can just take any train you want on the route. Leave Leiden when you feel like it, and just hop form one train to another till you are in Brugge.
If you buy a discounted mid-flex ticket you have to take the booked train on the cross border segment.

So if you for example book Leiden - Rotterdam - Antwerpen - Gent - Brugge then you have to take the booked train on Rotterdam - Antwerpen, but for the other segments you are free to take whatever train you want.

So if you are uncomfortable with the short connection in Rotterdam just take an earlier train from Leiden to Rotterdam. There are 6 trains per hour on that route.

Antwerpen - Gent has 3 trains per hour, one of those continues to Brugge. Gent Brugge has 4 trains per hour. So on the Belgian part of the route again, do not worry. If you miss a connection you take the next train.

I have done a similar route myself on many occasions. The last couple of months I had a lot of business in the Netherlands, and would combine that with a visit to my parents, who live half way between Gent and Brugge. When you book with nsinternational you get an email with clear instructions what you can use your ticket on. They even suggest to take an earlier domestic train when connecting with an international one.

Note that if you book in advance you might get good deals on Eurostar as well. By all means take those if the schedule suits you. Eurostar comes with a reserved seat, so that is a plus.

In that case the same applies as with the other train services: In the segments before and after the cross border train you are full flexible. Just treat the Leiden - Rotterdam train as if you were taking a subway to the main station...
