train route from Haarlem to Antwerp

We would appreciate your advise on the easiest route from Haarlem to Antwerp. Is there a route that doesn't require changing trains? Our first trip to Netherlands and Belgium is coming up, so we are excited to hear recommendations.

Nope. Your fastest way will require you to change trains at Rotterdam Centraal.
I will add that you need to buy a ticket since it is an international journey. Trips wholy within the Netherlands you just need to scan on and off with your credit card. No ticket needed.

I am also going from Netherlands to Belgium (Zaandam to Bruges). Sheesh, the connections are ...complicated.
Rome2Rio shows that you probably need to combine a bus and train, and connect through either Rotterdam or Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, then head to Antwerp. You may want to download the app for SNCB - NMBS International (the train company that covers both countries), and use that to get your tickets.
I looked on the website maninseat61, a great source of info, but unfortunately they don't list Haarlem as a starting point. You could use Rotterdam or Amsterdam, and then you will get a better idea of your options.
Happy travels!.

You may want to use the NS International app (the main Dutch train carrier) instead. It does show Haarlem as a starting point.

Stop using Rome2Rio. And stop assuming that because a trip involves transfers it is complicated. Changing trains is a normal, trivial and expected feature of train travel. You can't just run direct trains between every village. A good network has a hierarchy, and so a trip almost invariably involves local transport to a long distance train then again more local transport.

Just buy a ticket on www.nsinternational.com, and don't worry. Its easy.

Yes, Rome2Rio is unreliable. NS International will show the easy way with one change in Rotterdam. Hourly departures for the fastest way.

FOR JENLA: Just a heads up: When looking on NSInternational website, as suggested by several here, when I put in the date I want, it populates with the date one day BEFORE my selected date. So I want to travel on the 9th. When I select the 9th, it calculates travel for the 8th! So I went ahead and put in the 10th, in order to get the 9th. (Try it WENGEN and see if this happens to you.) And even accounting for possible time difference, if I try in the morning EST, it still shows the earlier day.
I went to a facebook group called amsterdam travel tips, and guess what? Has been happening for a YEAR, with no recourse for the purchasing party. Glad I caught that before spending my money.
It's giving me FIVE trains to get from Zaandam to Brugge.

Rome2Rio gives the exact same routing, sends me to OMIO, which is much simpler to understand, and same price.

I realize by the way the Rome2Rio is just a starting place, but it does give all options, which is always welcome.

You can get from Zaandam to Bruges with two connections (Schiphol and Brussels).

The NS International website is not the only one which has the incorrect date issue, and using a VPN does not help.

"I went to a facebook group called amsterdam travel tips" – Re those people who may have lost money. Was it because they picked the 9th, as an example, and it turned out to be a ticket for the 8th? Or, if they picked the 10th, was it showing the 9th in the final step before payment but the ticket issued ended up being for the 10th?

The Belgium Rail website, which can be used for Schiphol to Bruges, shows the dates correctly.

@Joan, what date are you looking for? The 9th of which month? I can check NS International for you as the Belgian site will be depending on NS slots..

Gundersen, they are putting in the date they want, then getting tickets for the day before (unless they see the error, in which case they put in the 10th to get the 9th). Ironically, the posts I saw were a year old, yet the problem still persists.

Barney, two senior travelers, may 9, anytime after 9:30 AM.

I do have the Belgian train app, and it shows two changes, Rotterdam and Antwerp. Not bad tho!
Departing 10:35 AM arriving 15:36 Bruges. the fare is 82 euros for two travelers.
I don't mind going thru Rotterdam and Antwerp vs Schiphol and Brussels. The search i did which returned two changes did not have the latter two as an option.

Thanks so much for your kind help!
Joan

We will make our way from Haarlem to Antwerp by first catching big red #300, then using NS app to buy tickets at Schiphol airport to Antwerp. We are hoping to use the NS app to buy our international tickets to Antwerp once we get to Haarlem since there seems to be problems purchasing them on line from the states. I read to get to the train station from the airport you go down several escalators and at the bottom you tap in at a yellow pole instead of going through a turnstile. Is there any other tips that might be helpful since we are not experienced travelers. Someone mentioned a supplemental charge too. Another tap? Does this sound like a doable plan? Thanks again for your insight.

You cannot tap in and out for an international train, only for trains entirely within the Netherlands. I do not see the problem taking one of the hourly trains to Rotterdam, then changing there to Antwerp. You can buy a ticket at Haarlem station.

As far as date shifting, I see it on a lot of sites, notably SNCF. It is just the software they are using. I just click on previous trains (or later trains as the case may be) until trains for the date I want come up.

For cross border trips you indeed need a ticket. You can't just tap in/out. The ticket will have a QR code, and that will open the gates at stations that have them.

Just book the whole trip on either the nsinternational.com or b-europe.,com. In both cases it will be the same trains. And you can of course also just buy the ticket at the station.

I would not do a bus + train combo on Haarlem - Brugge, as the bus-train connection will not be protected, whereas all your train connections are. And trains are more comfortable.
