Is there a significant difference between first and second class on the train from Amsterdam to Berlin? Is it worth an extra 40 Euro to go first class? Thoughts please.
Just in general, difference in classes on trains is rarely worth the extra expense. Maybe a bit more room, but second class is plenty roomy...not like the difference in planes. No other perks (drinks, food, entertainment). Maybe if you were traveling for business, several of you could get an area together to work, if you had a data plan there, maybe wifi connection...all good for the European business person, probably no benefit for the traveler. The most I would maybe spring for is if a reservation is optional, maybe reserve a seat.
Thanks! I did reserve a seat but booked second class.
If you're taking the ICE operated by Deutsche Bahn, here's the difference. The seats are exactly the same, but they're not spaced as densely. You get waiter service from the bistro and a free newspaper, if you would like. Usually significantly quieter, although 2nd class also has quiet carriages. The intention isn't so much extra comfort for tourists as more work space for business travelers.
Thanks for the info!
