The NYT has discovered Leiden

I opened up my email this morning to find an article from the New York Times about Leiden. Captioned "All the Canals and Charm of Amsterdam. None of the Crowds," it describes Leiden as a city whose university is often called the Oxford of the Netherlands, that features museums, gardens, murals and plenty of ways to stretch your mind.

All very true, although it makes me a little nervous that more people will discover the beauty of Leiden, and the crowds will start coming. But I'm altruistic at heart, and I want to share lovely destinations that deserve to be visited. So here is a look at one of my favorite places in Europe.

I would agree…..we stayed in Leiden instead of Amsterdam last spring for the tulip show at Keukenhof and found it delightful!

I like to stay in Leiden as a buffer if I am changing airlines at Schiphol. This is what I wrote about Leiden in my trip report as the tail end of the RS Adriatic tour:

”I flew Easy Jet from Dubrovnik to Amsterdam, and stayed one night in nearby Leiden at the Boutique Hotel Steenhof Suites. Originally the plan was to stay in Amsterdam or near the airport, but the available hotels were so expensive! I was able to take a 15-minute train from the airport to Leiden and stay in a beautiful, historic building with a room with white stucco artwork, a fireplace, tall ceilings, very modern bathroom with a view on a canal street - all for less than half the price - an easy decision!”

”Leiden is beautiful, and the area around the university and the center provided so many options for taking lovely photos! I walked off what was left of my feet and relaxed in my spacious room, enjoying reliving my trip locations!”

We are actually returning to Leiden next spring, and also to Steinhof Suites. We will be there for King's Day, which the hotel says is a pleasant festival there, not crazy as in Amsterdam.

Shhh!!!! Now everyone has to know. We didn't have a chance to visit Leiden last year when in the Netherlands. Luckily our flight to Zurich next year has a 24 hour stopover in Amsterdam, so we are heading to Leiden!

I’ve been visiting dear friends in Leiden for more than 30 years. While it’s always been a bit crowded, being a university town and biotech center, it has definitely been getting more so in recent years as development increases. I highly recommend visiting during the October 3 festival.

Thanks for sharing the article. I'm new to posting on the forum, but have been reading postings for the last 6 months to get recommendations about places to stay, restaurants, etc. So much useful info on this forum! We'll be taking the Best of Europe Tour (our 2nd Rick Steves Tour), starting in Haarlem the day before the King's Day Holiday 2026. We have decided to spend a couple of days pre-tour in Leiden, hoping it won't be as boisterous as Amsterdam will be! Trying to decide between staying at the Steenhof Suites or the Breathe Hotel. Thanks to all of you frequent posters who generously share your trip reports and other insights!

Oh, that will be fun, V-n-J! I think you'll enjoy Leiden, and it's definitely less crowded and chaotic than Amsterdam. Enjoy your trip!

V-n-J, we stayed at Breathe Hotel last month and loved it. It's a bit of a walk from the train station but it's in a very quiet neighbourhood. I wrote about it and Leiden in my Trip Report last month. If you're interested you can scroll down to days 10 and 11.

I'm with all of you that think we need to keep Leiden a secret. Cameron Hewitt has a blog about it and I laughed when he wrote this; “a charming historic university town without the tourist baiting sleaze.”

Well, I have to give credit for my discovery of Leiden to tonfromleiden who is a former forum member here. He's been gone for at least five years (although his posts still live on), but he was the one who first mentioned Leiden to me as a great place to visit and pointed me in that direction. I'm so glad he did. I really do love that place

I'm trying to think when I first "discovered" Leiden. Of course neither me nor the New York Times discovered Leiden. It's been there for a long time before us. I think I first went around '96 or '97.

I had some interesting accommodation on one of my visits. It was a former orphanage, dating back to the 18th or early 19th century I'd guess. Round by Pieterskerk in the old part of town, if anyone knows Leiden. It was completely original and unrestored in places. The kitchen looked like it was from a previous century. I stayed in a big, square ground floor room, sleeping on the floor. My Scottish friend was subletting for a few months while the actual tenant was away travelling the world. I'm not sure how rent and ownership worked actually, as it was a former squat which had passed into the squatters' hands by virtue of law that existed in The Netherlands at the time. The tenant had a great stereo and a huge collection of cassettes, even after most people moved to CD. I had heard Fela Kuti before, but this guy had all Fela's records on cassette and I have fond memories of getting up in the morning and grooving around the room to Shakara or Gentleman. My friend was labouring on a building project at an old house a block or so away, so I had the run of the place while he was at work. There was a lovely, ancient, overgrown garden to the rear, filled with piles of scrap fiets. There was another huge pile of less rusty communal bikes in the hallway for one to use as desired. The guy in the room next door (also Scottish) was carving a dugout canoe in his bedroom. He'd been working on it for a couple of years and it was only halfway done.

Not very tied to the topic at hand I know, but a little flavour of my Leiden experience. I stayed for about three weeks on one trip, with subsequent visits out from Amsterdam.

We were just in Leiden one night prior to a cruise out of Rotterdam in Sept. It was a highlight of our whole trip! It was a warm Friday evening and people out and about everywhere! Beautiful wooden boats cruising around in the scenic canals. Likely students and of all ages dining along the walkways, lovely old buildings and canals. It was delightful and festive! Best kept secret…hope it stays that way!
