taxi from Rijksmuseum to restaurant near Anne Frank Huis & time for tickets

In a few days the tickets at Anne Frank Huis will go on sale for the one day we are in town. We hope to get to the Rijksmuseum when it opens at 9 but several things could delay us. (That is the reason we are not starting with AFH.) We will want lunch and a bit of a sit down break. I have a few questions to help me decide what time to reserve at AFH.

We are considering Cafe t' Smalle near AFH for lunch.I don't think they take reservations for lunch. Is 1 1/2 hours enough time to get a table and have lunch? What is the experience of folks with the speed of service.

I am guessing it is about a 10 minute walk to AFH from the restaurant. We are old and slow. Is this about right.

With a timed reservation how far in advance do we need to get to AFH.

With 4 of us a taxi makes sense. Is there a taxi stand at Rijksmuseum and if so where on Museumplein is it located. (Distance to walk from the exit of museum.

Thanks in advance for any tips. Sunday morning is when I will purchase AFH tickets.

Okay, let's say you make it to the Rijk's by 9:30. Will you have prepurchased tickets or museumkaart for entrance? If not, you will have to go to the ticket desk and possibly stand in line to buy them. That may or may not take a few minutes, depending on crowds. The toilets are nearby so you might want to take advantage of them before beginning your trek around the museum. There are also rentable lockers by the toilets so you can drop off anything you don't want to carry around the museum. So let's now say it is 9:45 or so and you are ready to enter the museum section. I would suggest a minimum of 2.5 hours to view the art. That would have you leaving the museum about 12:15. If you walk slowly, I am thinking it will take you about 15-20 minutes to find your way back to the museum exit and walk to where the taxi stand is. So now it is around 12:30 or so. The taxi ride shouldn't take more than about ten - fifteen minutes to reach t'Smalle so you should arrive there about 12:45. Allow an hour or so to be seated, served, eat, use toilet, and it is 1:45. AFH is about a five minute walk from your restaurant, ten if you dawdle. So, reservations for 2:00 are possible, 2:30 if you want to build in a little extra time cushion and window shop on your way to the AFH.

Should you choose to leave the museum earlier and eat early, there are shops along the Prinsengracht canal where you can waste time looking around before entering AFH. You may just choose to stay at t'Smalle and have a few beers and look at the canal/people watch. Adjust your schedule based upon the amount of time you think you would like to spend at the Rijk's.

I haven't eaten at t'Smalle so I cannot tell you about the food or service. I did check reviews on TA and overall they seem to get good/excellent reviews. Poor reviews about food and service were a few years old.

Make sure you come back to the forum and give us a review and how things worked out for you. I will be in Amsterdam late October/early November and would like to know what you thought about t'Smalle as it is near our apt.

Thanks Nance, this is very helpful. We are definitely getting prepaid tickets to Rijksmuseum, any way to save precious time we can. I do plan to do a trip report when we get back.
