Sunday Protest in Amsterdam

Just an FYI. We were notified this morning that our tickets to the Van Gogh museum have been canceled because they are closing for the day due to planned Gaza protests. I imagine things could be a little chaotic there that day.

I just checked and if you're interested in the Rijksmuseum instead, they're still selling tickets for Sunday. We have tickets for that day and the website doesn't mention any closures.

The Gaza protest will start at 1 PM on Sunday October 5 and will be held on the Museumplein / Museumsquare in Amsterdam.
The Van Gogh museum is located right on that square, so given the expected number of protesters, I can understand why they would close. The Rijksmuseum is in that area as well, but its location is a bit away from the Museumplein. If you want to visit the Rijksmuseum on October 5, it’s best to approach the entrance of the museum from the northeast, from the direction of the Stadhouderskade.

How did you buy your tickets? At the official website of the Van Gogh Museum? Or thru a 3rd party? The Van Gogh museum is definitely closed on Sunday October 5, so you should contact whoever you bought your tickets from to get reimbursed.

Just received an email from the Rijksmuseum confirming that is still open but they are moving the entrance to a new location.

The entrance to the Rijksmuseum has therefore been temporarily moved to Jan Luijkenstraat, on the corner of Hobbemastraat ( click here for navigation). https://maps.app.goo.gl/kNiHXC36KwEzUz5K6?g_st=ac

I was at the Rijksmuseum today and the protest crowds outside are crazy. The news describes it as "tens of thousands." It seems peaceful though. We had to fight through crowds to get back to the subway. I can understand why some museums closed. I can't remember which one, but we were talking to a couple from Bend, Oregon who said they had tickets to another museum (not the Van Gough) and it was also closed.

According to the organizers of the protest there were 250000 participants. The protest was peaceful, but of course a crowd of that size causes some inconvenience. Which is why it’s a good thing that the Van Gogh museum (please mind the spelling) and the Stedelijk museum decided to close for this day.

We were at the Rijksmuseum as well, and it turned out to be a great day to do it. The place was sparsely populated and my understanding is that that is not generally the case.
