So, this summer I'm going to The Netherlands for two weeks to visit my dad's side of the family. I'll be staying in Arcen, which is around 2 hours southwest of Amsterdam. I was just wondering if there is anything that is a necessity while I'm there. I know I'm going to Phantasialand (a themepark) in Germany for one day and then Belgium for an authentic Belgian waffle another. And of course I'll be spending a day in Amsterdam, but is there anything else that I need to do while I'm down there?
Kroeller-Mueller Museum in the Hoge Veluwe National Park north of Arnhem. Van Gogh paintings (along with other notable impressionists) in a park setting.
Don't know if you like beer or sorry if not old enough but try some those Trappist Belgian beers that are expensive imports in the USA and some Fritten. Also maybe tell the forum some of the things you are interested so we can make informed recommendations.
You'll probably like Maastricht, the most un-Dutch of Dutch cities. Den Bosch (officially: 's-Hertogenbosch) has is charms. Combine it with the well-restored fortified city of Heusden. A little bit further on you have Dordrecht, the gateway to the windmills of Kinderdijk. And a lot more.
Two places to consider: Also in the same province – Limburg - as Arcen, west of Roermond you can visit lovely village Thorn, your family certainly knows the place. Well to combine with Maastricht, west of it across the Belgian border Alden Biesen castle.
