Suggestions to plan a day trip from Amsterdam to Haarlem, Lieden and Hague

Me and my husband will be travelling to Amsterdam for 4 days towards the end of this month in march 2017. We were planning to do the nearby cities in one of the four day stay. We would start from Amsterdam to Haarlem early in the morning, spend some hours there. Then travel to Leiden from Haarlem. Again spend some hours there. Then travel to Hague from Leiden and spend time till 8pm. Then we plan to come back to Amsterdam and retire for the day. I have the following questions regarding this plan:

1) Should I purchase Single tickets for all the train journeys from Amsterdam- Haarlem , Haarlem - Leiden, Lieden- Hague, Hague- Amsterdam, or is there a alternative to save money like some regional ticket or something.

2) We don't plan to visit any museums in any of the places. we just want to have a feel of the old cities by leisurely walking the area. So will one day be sufficient to visit all these places or am
I being too ambitious with the plan.
(P.S. I know certainly all of these places need individual days to fully see the places. but we donot have that much time in our visit this time to netherlands)

3) Are there any places in particular which we should not be missing while in Haarlem, Lieden and Hague. Any suggestions are welcome.
(P.S. We have a small baby and thus a stroller inevitably every where we go)

4) We plan to do a canal tour in Amsterdam. I have heard a canal tour is good in Lieden as well. So should we be planning one in Lieden if we are going for a canal tour in Amsterdam or give it a miss or is it even possible in the time we have?

That is certainly one of the plans. We plan to go keukenhof one day. But I would really appreciate an answer to my above post.

You'll save some money by buying tickets from Amsterdam to The Hague. It allows you to interrupt your journey in Haarlem and Leiden (mind the spelling).
In Haarlem an walk to the Markt and back along the Spaarne river gives you a good impression of this nice city. You could have a peek at the huge windmill near the Spaarne.
In Leiden the Rapenburg canal and the streets around the nearby Pieterskerk (»Peter's Church«) are among the best the city has on offer. Return to the station along the Nieuwe Rijn (»New Rhine«). I'd skip a canal tour. Leiden is a city to explore on foot.
In The Hague the government complex of the Binnenhof is not to be missed. The Vijverberg and the Lange Voorhout (check on Google Maps) are beauties. You might make an exception to your no-museum rule for the Panorama Mesdag, one of the very few panoramas left in the world. It gives a magnificent view of Scheveningen (the beach resort of The Hague) around 1900.

The Hague has a lot of modern architecture and not much of an old center besides the Binnenhof. If your goal is to walk around characteristic old towns in the Netherlands, I'd go to Delft instead of the Hague. Three cities in one day with a baby is probably too much in any case. And skip the canal tour in Leiden if you are already doing one in Amsterdam.

As far as train tickets go, if you want to avoid waiting in line, you could get Tripkey passes for yourself and your husband when you arrive in the Netherlands and just swipe it at the card readers when you enter the train station (same thing with buses and trams). It will probably save you time and money. See tripkey.nl for more details.

I second T's suggestion to visit Delft rather than The Hague. I found Delft to be an absolutely delight, and since you're interested in experiencing the atmosphere by just wandering the streets, Delft is ideal for that, with lovely houses on pedestrian-friendly canal-lined streets.

I hope you have good weather in late March to enjoy your leisurely walks!

Have a great trip!

Thank you so much everyone for taking out time to reply and I just love all the suggestions and the detail layout of plan quite according to what I had in mind. Thanks espicially tonfromleiden for that. After reading the reviews and suggestions you guys have put, I checked images fro Delft and it sure is looking very beautiful and quaint. Now I am in a fix to remove which one from the list of the places I want to see. Will it be 1)Haarlem, 2) Leiden, 3) The Hague, or 4) Delft. I would really like some advice regarding this. I definitely like Leiden and Delft.
1) So should I just do Leiden and Delft instead of three cities in one day ?
2) Or if I have some time left in theday, which city should it be? The Hague or Haarlem?

I have another question regarding another day of my Netherlands travel. The day we are leaving from Amsterdam, our flight is on a Tuesday and at 5pm from schipol airport. So we have roughly around 5-6 hours in the day (If we start at 8 am and reach airport by 3 pm). So we were thinking initially to just go to Volendam and Marken. But after reading many reviews on Volendam, I am doubting to visit Volendam as everyone is saying its very touristy and we should rather visit Edam and Marken for a more relaxed and authentic experience. Is this true?
1) Is going to Volendam required if we are going to Marken?
2)should we rather just do Edam and Marken?
3) Or there is any other better alternative to this?

Leiden and Delft are easily combined: the train to Delft goes via Leiden. Just get off, have a walk and pick up the next train to Delft.
Why not Hoorn instead of Volendam & Marken? Historical former port town. Less touristy. Easily reached by train from Amsterdam Centraal (half-hourly direct Intercity train, taking 35 mins).
Use this as your trustworthy real-time train planner.

I was very impressed with Hoorn when I was there last summer. The Westfries Museum had an excellent collection of Golden Age artifacts. They also have a virtual reality room where you can "walk" through the streets of 16th century Hoorn. The old town is extremely charming, plus you have the old port and the sea right at your doorstep. You should seriously consider it.
