We will fly into Amsterdam from Lyon and leave the next day. Any suggestions where to stay that is not too expensive or too sterile?
Thanks, Cathy

The historic university town of Leiden-which is a 16-minute train ride to Schipol- is where I usually stay the night before a flight. The Best Western Leiden is only a 10-minute walk from Leiden’s train station.
Citizen M is right next to Schiphol and very reasonably priced. You can look at the photos on TripAdvisor to decide if it is too sterile for you. It is pretty basic but it was clean, modern, the bed was comfy and it was convenient. We stayed there when we had a less than 24 hour layover from Africa. After we checked in to the hotel, we hopped on the train from the airport and spent the time we had left having a nice Indonesian dinner in Amsterdam and reacquainting ourselves with one of our favorite cities. We had a good stress free night’s sleep and then it was a short walk from the hotel to the terminal for our flight home.
I just booked an overnight stay at the Hilton Amsterdam Airport. You can walk from the airport to the hotel.
There is a Sheraton as well right at the airport.
Cost was $246 per night if you are a Hilton Honor member.
I haven't stayed here but I booked the Novotel Amsterdam Schiphol Airport for the night before a flight home. Five minute train ride to airport.
We're staying at Citizen M now. Clean and modern---only issue I have is that the room is exactly the width of a king size bed. There is no access on each side---the bed is against the window and 3 walls, meaning only one person has access to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. We put the pillows up against the window side so we could scoot down the bed to get out instead of crawling over each other. Not sure I'd do that again, but if you don't have to get up in the middle of the night, it's fine and the price is right.
Space is precious in The Netherlands!
Hilton Amsterdam airport never saw an opportunity to charge an extra fee pass it by. I would never stay there again.
Husband and I have stayed twice at Schipol Hampton Inn in Hoofddorp which is one train stop from airport. Easy to walk from train station to hotel. Nice breakfast. Cafe has limited menu. We were able to store our luggage there for late evening departure while attending tulip festival during day. They have early morning shuttle to airport.
I always stay at the Ibis out there; they run a shuttle from 5 am to 1am more or less.
