Spring Trip/Friesen Region

My wife and I will be taking a trip in end of April/beginning of May. Part of the trip is for my wife to explorer where both sets of her grandparents came from in the Netherlands. Her grandfather that she knew best lived in the City of Sneek which is located in the Friesland Province. It is hard to find a whole lot of information regarding Friesland---Rick's book does not even mention it.

Has anyone traveled to this region? In looking at maps it would appear our best way to get their from Amsterdam would be to rent a car for that part of the trip. Would anyone else agree this would be the best option? Last, would appreciate any information on lodging or places/things to see. Thank you in advance.

There is plenty of information available about Friesland, but indeed not in Rick’s book. Luckily there are other guidebooks out there that don’t ignore this very beautiful part of our country.

Friesland is known for its “11 cities” of which Sneek (Snits in the Frisian language) is one. The best way to visit these cities is by car. More details about the 11 cities here; https://www.friesland.nl/en/discover/eleven-cities-and-villages

If you want to see all 11 cities, you’ll need several days. How much time do you have?

Agree with Dutch_traveler using a car. Not only for the cities but also the villages and the countryside. Besides a beautiful province it’s also packed with traditions like sailing races with traditional cargo boats (skûtsjesilen), pole vaulting over ditches (fierljeppen), the 11 cities ice skating tour, having it's own official language, own breed of Frisian horses (like Tornado in the Mask of Zorro – 1998) and so on.

Enjoy your trip, plan more days as already noticed.

Lonely Planet and Rough Guide guide books both have sections on Sneek. The Rough Guide seems to offer more details than LP.

Thanks to everyone so far for the information. It will be very helpful in my planning. I am still working on an itinerary but think we may have only 2-3 days at most to explore this region and definitely will get a car.
