sleeping in Amsterdam

A friend and I will be in Amsterdam at the beginning of December. We would love suggestions on very reasonably priced, nice boutique hotels or B&B with great location. Any thoughts?

Hotel Brouwer. It's not fancy, but is in a great location and reasonably priced.

We are currently at the Chasse Hotel. Is is in an old church and has large rooms and an amazing rain shower. Very quiet. Not in the thick of things, but close to 4 different tram lines which take you most everywhere. Breakfast is extra, but very good. We booked the room early, through their website and got a rate of 126€ a night. Staff very responsive to email inquiries. The hotel opened April 2017. It is an easy walk to Foodhallen which is a fun place to try different food and drink stalls; music on weekends.

We recently enjoyed our stay at Barangay B&B. Close to Centraal and transportation links, very short walk to many restaurants and stores along a large commercial street. The room was comfortable, clean, and very quiet. Lots of amenities, kettle, coffees, teas. A beautiful and huge breakfast was delivered to the room each morning. We arranged for the Patio rooms because a friend had mobility issues; just a few steps. We were all happy with our choice.

I had a bad experience with Hotel Brouwer. Their elevator was broken and wasn't scheduled to be fixed for a week; the only staircase was a tiny spiral one (think Ste Chapelle's in Paris). I decided to ditch the hotel when I arrived, and they ushered me out the door right away. Not exactly friendly. Using RS's guidebook I couldn't find another room in Amsterdam with an elevator (this was a Wednesday afternoon at the end of September), nor could anyone I spoke with refer me to a room-finding service, so I ended up staying in nearby Haarlem, which I really enjoyed. But even there I had to switch hotels during my three-night stay. Amsterdam was much more crowded with tourists than I was expecting. Haarlem was a pleasant alternative.

Check out Hotel Luxer. It's a boutique hotel near the Red Light District. It's a 5-minute walk from Centraal Station and there are a lot of great shops and restaurants nearby.

We stayed at Hotel Cappuccino in the Jordaan last September and loved it. The location was great. 1 block from the canal, and a short walk to the Anne Frank Museum & Nines shopping district. It was also a longer, but very doable walk to the museum district. The rooms were spotless and everything appears to be recently renovated. Owners/Managers friendly & helpful and made us feel very welcome. We paid 175€ per night at the time (plus tax), which I thought was reasonable for Amsterdam.

We stayed at NH Doelen which we got on Priceline for about 100 USD. However, I think it is closed for total renovations which is not a surprise considering the great location. We walked past Hotel Browaer and found it very unappealing--entrance looked weedy and run down. The non working elevator would be a deal breaker for sure. The Keizerhof in RS book was not a pleasant experience on a previous trip. No elevator and luggage had to be hauled up 3 flights via a spiral staircase. There were showers/sinks in room but toilet was shared by 5 rooms (10 people). I think Harleem would be a good option--nice town and the Frans Hals Museum is not to be missed.

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Orlando a small hotel with 5 large rooms, some with canal view, near the river. It is run by a couple of expats and we liked the location and the ambience.

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Orlando

Janet, I won't swear to it but I believe Hotel Orlando is closed.

Karen, I don't have your dates and don't know if you've booked yet but we enjoyed The Bridge Hotel very much. They do not have a lift but that didn't bother us. Just don't book a "skylight" room with no other windows.

We stayed at Banks Mansion. Very central location, and they have a self serve, free bar in the lobby. They put out snacks and a cheese cart in the late afternoons. At the bar they have wine, champagne, hard spirits, port, soft drinks, juice and water, plus a coffee machine. Great service, very friendly. Mini bar in the rooms are also free and there are decanters of booze in the rooms too. It was nice having a glass of wine in the lobby (they call it the living room) before dinner, then a post dinner drink before we went up to our room for the night. They also have free made to order breakfast.
