Self transfer at AMS

We're arriving on Aer Lingus from Dublin and connecting to Sky Express for Athens. We have 1hr 35 for the transfer. Is this enough for the transfer given that this is a "self transfer"? Any help or insight appreciated. I will have a checked bag, but no mobility issues. Thanks for any hints or insights.

You will make it if the first flight arrives on time and if you are flying on one ticket.
Was there a longer layover option that you could have chosen?

Since you said "self transfer" I take that to mean you have separate tickets with Sky Express. That means you will have to get off Aer Lingus flight, go through passport control, fetch your bag from baggage area, go to airline counter and recheck your bag, go back through security and on to your gate. In my opinion you will probably not have enough time to do that in 1.5 hours, especially if it is a busy time at the airport.

This airport website helps you plan transfers and tells you how busy the airport will be. https://www.schiphol.nl/en/transfers/

Whenever I have gambled with separate tickets (or self transfers) I have found the best practice is to give yourself at least 3 hours minimum to make it.

I really hope you haven’t bought your tickets yet, because the chances of you making your flight if you want to travel with a checked bag are very slim to none.
As you can see on the website of Sky Express, the check in counters close 50 minutes before departure. This means that you’ll have only 45 minutes to get off the plane, walk to passport control, go thru passport control with likely a non-EU passport, pick up your luggage and make your way to the check in desks.

The Sky Express website states, ” The check-in counters close 40' before departure from Greek airports and 50' before departure from airports abroad.”. That means you really only have 45 min to get off the plane, get through immigration, retrieve your luggage and get to the Sky Express check in to drop off your luggage. After that, you have to go through security and get to your departure date.

It sounds like you have already bought your tickets. This is a very risky self-connection. I’d be prepared to buy a new ticket if you miss the Sky Express flight.

Thanks everyone. I came to the same conclusion that it was too tight and too many unknowns. I booked a more expensive flight without the self transfer. Cheers.

I agree with your assertion that this self-transfer would have been too tight. I’m confused however what you mean by that there are too many unknowns. The process of this kind of self transfer at Schiphol isn’t unknown, but is exactly how CL, Laura and myself have described it in our posts. Not writing this to start a discussion or anything, just want to confirm for others who might think of doing this kind of self-transfer that the process is exactly how it’s described here.

Hi Dutch - unknowns include will the flight be late, will there be a backup in unloading baggage, will there be a long line for check-in at Sky. Since the check in closes 45 or 5- minutes prior to departure I concluded it too risky, esp if needing to go back thru passport control. Thanks in any case for your thoughts.

I would call things like your incoming flight to be late uncertainties not unknowns.
Also, if you had done this you would not need to go thru passport control after dropping off your luggage at the check in counter, only security. If you fly from Amsterdam to Athens, you stay within the Schengen area, so no passport control.

The self-transfer process with a checked bag would have been; Follow signs to baggage claim, go thru passport control to enter Schengen Area, pick up luggage, drop off luggage at check-in, security, walk to gate, board plane.
Your transfer process on one ticket is now; follow signs to next gate, go thru passport control to enter Schengen Area, continue to walk to gate, board plane.
