Can someone recommend a tour company or bike rental? We are arriving AMS in early Oct and 11 days between Netherlands and Belgium. Thank you.
I have no experience with tour companies organizing itineraries between Amsterdam and Bruges. Nevertheless I can suggest the following itinerary:
-Amsterdam – Muiden / Muiderslot castle – Weesp cycling along the Vecht river all the way to Utrecht / Maarssen-dorp (or even to castle Slot Zuylen) and cross there the canal to head to Castle Haarzuilens.
-From there to Linschoten – Montfoort – Oudewater – Gouda – along little river Vlist to Schoonhoven to take the ferry to Groot-Ammers. Detour to Nieuwpoort and then along the river Lek all the way to the windmills of Kinderdijk.
-From there you can bike or take the waterbus (bikes are free) to Dordrecht – Willemstad – Zierikzee - Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier – detour to Domburg – Veere – Middelburg – Vlissingen.
-From the latter ferry to Breskens – Groede – Groede Podium (a WW2 bunker village once part of the Atlantikwall) – along the dunes to Cadzand-Bad – Retranchement / Terhofstede – Sluis + detour to Sint Anna ter Muiden. Further along the canal with a detour to Oostkerke to Damme and Bruges.
There are a few things you have to think about doing a selfguided tour. Like where to drop the bike after the tour. What to do with your luggage and what to do if the wind is strong, not uncommon in October. Can be a serious challenge in the countryside with it’s open character, especially in Zeeland.
So have you already some idea’s about this? Think that there are tour companies offering complete pakkages, but you have to follow their itinerary and than it's no more a selfguided tour.
Although the Netherlands has extensive bike routes, including one that goes right through Kinderdijk, Belgium may not have such complete routings. I'm not a serious biker, so I would not ride 150 miles anywhere. Like a rental car, the fact that you would be returning the bike in a different country adds difficulty to the project, unless you can find a multi-day bike tour. I'm simply suggesting that it may be more productive to search for a bike tour or rental to near the border with Belgium.
Another approach would be to train to Rotterdam, Den Haag, or Utrecht, whichever interests you more, and rent a bike there for a few local days. Among the many daytrip options besides Kinderdijk would be the Delta Works, Delft, and Amersfoort. Just trying to offer some ideas. Rotterdam averages 11-16 rain days in October. It's on the cool side. (Plenty of climate websites to study.)
There is a dedicated bike lane along the canal from Sluis (close to the national border, but still in the Netherlands) to Damme and Bruges. So perfectly safe, there is no reason to worry.
Thank you very much for all feedback.
