Seeking itinerary feedback: Less time in The Netherlands to see Belgium?

Hello All--

My husband and I are flying into Amsterdam on May 9 and flying out of London on May 23. This is our first time to both. We like art, history, architecture, and nature, as well as just people watching and experiencing a new place.

We prefer slower travel, but also want to make the most of our time (and airfare). I originally planned to include three days in Belgium to see Bruges and Ghent (with a quick stop in Brussels on the way). I am now leaning towards more days in The Netherlands.

Please take a look at the itinerary below. Any thoughts on whether to tighten it to include Belgium? If I had to guess, we won't be this close to Belgium again, so it kind of feels like now or never for Belgium...but we don't want to slight The Netherlands. Dilemma!!!

Thanks in advance for the input.

Tuesday, May 9
-Arrive in Amsterdam, travel to Haarlem (sleep in Haarlem until we leave for London).

Wednesday, May 10
-Explore Amsterdam, primarily focusing on the old center and the Red Light District.

Thursday, May 11
-Keukenhof...this could shift to any day up to May 14, the last day of Keukenhof (I plan to buy tickets once I check the weather, unless I see tickets are selling out). Possible biking through the fields.

Friday, May 12
-Rijkmuseum (crossing fingers and toes regarding release of additional Vermeer tickets)
-Vondelpark
-Van Gogh museum (open Fridays until 9pm)

Saturday, May 13
-Haarlem, to include Corrie ten Boom House and Frans Hals Hof.

Sunday, May 14
-Rotterdam and Kinderdijk

Monday, May 15
-Delft (possibly The Hague, if time)

Tuesday, May 16
-Explore Amsterdam, focusing on Jordaan/Anne Frank Haus/canal tour

Wednesday, May 17
-Leiden (possibly The Hague, if time)

Thursday, May 18
-Train to London
-5 nights/4.5 days in London

Tuesday, May 23
-Fly home

Two comments regarding your time in The Netherlands.

Split Rijks and Van Gogh over two different days. There is so much to see in both you may find it too much for just one day. I took a canal cruise following my time at Vermeer/Rijks just to unwind and relax from walking, standing and looking for 4+ hours. Get timed entry for both museums. Best of luck with Vermeer tickets.

Visit The Hague rather than Rotterdam. Also, Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earing will be back at Mauritshuis in The Hague by the time you go.

I would visit the Keukenhof sooner rather than later. Yes, the gardeners of the Keukenhof will do their best to make sure there are still flowers in bloom until closing day, but they can’t stop Mother Nature. By May 11 the garden will be past its prime and with every passing day there will be less flowers.
The flowers in the fields will be cut off by then, so I wouldn’t go on a bike ride.

“ Friday, May 12
-Rijkmuseum (crossing fingers and toes regarding release of additional Vermeer tickets)
-Vondelpark
-Van Gogh museum (open Fridays until 9pm)”

I wouldn’t visit 2 major art museums on the same day, so I would move one of them to another day.
If you move your Rijksmuseum visit to Sunday and don’t mind paying extra, there are still tickets available to the weekly Vermeer lecture held every Sunday at 1 pm. These combi tickets include a lecture about Vermeer followed by a visit of the exhibit; https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/whats-on/lectures-symposiums/closer-to-vermeer

The Dutch word for house is huis, not haus. Haus is in fact the German word for house, so please don’t use that word to refer to a house in the Netherlands.

Thanks to both of you for your input. I will split the two museums into separate days.

Dutch_traveler--A special thank you for the tip regarding the Vermeer lecture; I just used the link to purchase tickets. Also, I appreciate the crucial correction about the Anne Frank Huis.

Yeah, there always seems to be more you want to do/see then there is time ... I run into this every time I plan a trip ... I prioritize what we want to see and if (actually when) we run of of time, the lower priority items get cut ... if you wanted to add 2-3 days in Belgium, I see 3 possibilities: 1) take 1 day from London ... 2) combine Leiden and Delft into 1 day ... 3) combine some Amsterdam activities, especially if Keukenhof and biking the tulip fields doesn't work out due to no flowers ... take the train to Brussels and you can rent a car a car for a day or two to see Ghent and Bruges ... or I'm sure there are day tours you can catch, or possibly a bus or train, I'm not familiar with their transportation between cities.

Turn up and go trains run every 3 times an hour from Brussels to Ghent and Bruges- 30 minutes to Ghent. 50 minutes to Bruges.

If you go to Belgium,do not rent a car in this congested and well-served by train area. I personally would prioritize sleeping in Antwerp and daytripping to the other places, but many here worship the Chakra of Bruges. Except for the main art museum and maybe the Magritte museum, I would say that on a tight schedule, Brussels is missable. (I don't mean that in a nasty way; I've been there on several daytrips from Antwerp. I also like the Bozar Museum and some churches. Forget about the Euro Parliament or the Atomium.) If necessary, you could see Gent in half a day, and a full-day for Bruges. Reservations for some attractions needed, like Mystic Lamb.

Because your Netherlands schedule is reasonable, I can't urge you to cut things to include Belgium. But Bruges is the city people will ask you about at cocktail parties. They won't ask you about Leiden (which I like) or Rotterdam (which is a landmark of modern architecture and design.) Kinderdijk is great, but maybe falls slightly below Bruges on my scale. (Very much a matter of opinion, not fact.)

I do not mean to preach, but do not over-value the Red Light District in Amsterdam. I'm not going to say anything about s*x-workers or unskilled immigrants, but there's just not that much to see, and it's kind of depressing. It's also visible, less glamorously, in other Dutch and Belgian cities. I was underwhelmed by Haarlem, even though Rick loves it. You could make better use of your Amsterdam days by sleeping in Amsterdam. (As they say in the Trip Advisor NYC Forum, "To see New York City, Stay in New York City." Opinion.

Thank you again to all for the feedback. I've tweaked the Amsterdam portion of the itinerary, with the biggest changes being splitting the Rijks and Van Gogh museums into separate days, basing ourselves out of Amsterdam instead of Haarlem, removing Rotterdam due to time constraints/interests, and removing the Red Light District from the itinerary. Turns out if you actually communicate with your husband about what you're each interested in, you find out no one is interested in seeing the "must-see" RLD. ;-) (Thanks, Tim, for prompting that conversation).
