Schiphol to Central station

Just checking my understanding.
I can tap my CC to get on the train?

I believe you tap in to enter the platform area, then tap out exiting at Centraal. That way the system knows where you got on and off and can charge the correct fare to your card.

At Schiphol, the tap machine is before you get on the escalators down to the trains. There is no turnstile, so you must look for the machine. You may also tap via your Apple Watch or Apple Wallet on your phone. No need to get the credit card out. Have a great trip.

You can tap in on one of the yellow poles next to the stairs down to the underground platforms at Schiphol. There are no turnstiles. However, there are turnstiles at Amsterdam Centraal Station that open when you tap out.

Do note AmEx is not accepted.

Do note AmEx is not accepted.

Good point to remember, and the thing to also remember is that your Apple Watch or Apple Wallet "maintains" that AmEx for the stored card. IOW, using Apple Wallet, make sure the card you're using is not AmEx. I have several CCs linked, and my default is AmEx, but I just scroll to the next card in line that I want to use.

Probably common sense, but in the rush of new places and new things, the little stuff can fuistrate or trip you up.

Taking this one step further for Apple users, I add my non-AMEX card in the “Express Transit Card” setting in my Apple Watch app. That way, you can just tap your wrist to the gate without waking your watch up.

@Jay thanks for the tip about setting up an express transit card! I commute by subway daily & had no idea that existed.

To follow up on this subject, can the same payment method (tap in at origin, tap out at destination) be used for longer distance trains, e.g. Amsterdam-The Hague?

WW….yes. We traveled all over for a week and it was so easy it was incredible. And the cost of the journey appeared on the phone as we exited at our destination.

Thanks for the quick reply Denny.

Makes me wonder why anyone would use OV-chipkaart if all travel within NL, local and intercity, can be paid for by a contactless credit or debit card.

Well, for locals like me a OVchipkaart is still very useful because you can load subscriptions onto it, get discounts, rent a bike with it etc.
For tourists however, the OV chipkaart has become pretty much useless now.

WW, we took several train trips and while math is far from my strong point, it seemed the OV card wouldn’t really have benefited us, and involved more than just the ease of tap/tap and away. It made travel effortless and easy, no purchasing tickets, no lines, just go. Really a pleasure.
